Welcome! I have great memories of driving my first Morgan around in north wales when living in Chester (1996 -1997). What an eye opener it was to us; the beauty of the country side. Our daughter was born in Chester. We went back in 2007 with the Mog to show her where she was born and of course toured nothern Wales too.

Richard: Many thanks. Visited Perth once in the late '80s.....very nice place.....we have friends who live there and also someone working there at present.....hope to visit one day on the 'Grand Tour'......once the young ones have left the nest!

Bob: My Welsh isn't what it should be.....sad to say. My guess is that you meant 'Gwartheg' which means cattle; 'Defaid' is sheep - but don't quote me please!

BertR: Thank you. Whilst you have fond memories of North Wales I have some of The Netherlands. I was in the Arnhem, Roermond and Xanten areas last year on a summer car and cycling holiday.....oh how I wish we had your cycle paths over here!

We lived in that area through the 1990s and cycled everywhere.
Back in South Wiltshire we quickly gave up cycling, the roads were not cycle friendly and it was just not enjoyable.

Talking to local planners at the time it soon became clear that there were no plans to change anything, mostly because proper cycle tracks need space and along most roads there is nowhere to put them and no money to build them.

More recently the lack of road maintenance has made the situation worse, after 10 years gathering dust our nice German bikes went to the tip: no one wanted them, even as a gift.

Peter J: Unfortunately, some parts of the UK countryside do not easily lend themselves to the creation of purpose built cycle paths....though I can't help but feel that a lot of bridleways could double up without too much inconvenience to the equine community (a one metre wide hard surface either to the side or in the middle with soft tracks for the horses?). The cost I guess would be prohibitive, if local authorities don't have the resources to fix the existing roads I suspect that cycle and bridle paths have no chance of being improved.

The lanes here in North Wales (and I suspect in other areas of the country) now carry far too much fast moving traffic to be safe for cyclists (IMHO of course!), the A and B roads are of course much worse.

Shame about your bikes......
