Can anyone in Talk Morgan world tell me what is the size of the Cotter Pin (dia.& length) that is fitted to the Stub Axle, the one that holds the castellated bearing retaining nut. As I need to fit new ones and I am not near the car to take any measurements. I cannot seem to find this information documented on any of the regular websites

The split pins are soft metal so the length is not important as you can cut the legs shorter if needed. I've never seen dimensions for size re diameter. The hole will be between an eighth and a quarter inch I would estimate. A bag of pins from Halfords should include the size you want. Both legs will be about an eighth together? Any other views?

Thanks for your rely Dave. I appreciate that the length is not a critical value as in so much as they are easily shortened, but there is a big difference between 1/8"and a 1/4". As I recollect I think it is 1/8" but it could be 3/32". It's just I am looking for the correct fit pin in Stainless Steel, I don't want to buy a boxed set of cheap pins in mild steel that I will never use again, because I am a bit of a tight a**e

I'd go along with 1/8" but like Dave I keep an assortment. Why not give John Worrall a bell at Heart of England Morgans? He'll give you chapter and verse.

Go to an autojumble, selection boxes of split pins and other little bits and bobs are easily found. And at much better prices than Halfords and the like.

American English seems to have taken over here, but to me, cotter pins are the tapered pins one used to find on bicycles holding the cranks on.

yes I call 'em split pins too...Cotters are crank pins

Should have added, zero point in stainless. All the ones you'll find on a Morgan are in greasy/oily environments and you are not meant to re-use them either.

Although truthfully, quite a lot of us do re-use carefully, but most pins are wreaked by being straightened two times so after the second use, they are dropped in the bin.

I bet stainless is tricky to bend and unbend down a wire wheel hub.

Also cotter pins are used to locate the brake pedal to the cross shaft on early Land Rovers, just a bit of useless information!

Agreed Dave , but it does depend upon the grade of stainless. I think the "norm" for fastenings is 304.

I would certainly not want bits of broken cotter pin inside a Morgan wire wheel hub. (BTW Is this another reason for specifying alloys? ;-) Ducking for Cover )
