My garage is quite small and when I noticed I wanted to reach something in the passenger well of the car rather than squeezing round the back of the car I put my hand on the area just behind the gear stick. Then leaned over to pick it up..........THEN SNAP!

I assumed that whatever was covering the gearbox was quite robust however upon visiting the factory last week I managed to spot this.

It seems that the cover is a thin plastic with various optional cut outs for left or right hand drive. The central area which I snapped looks like its for a trinket tray although I haven't seen one fitted.

Anyway think before leaning or better still walk round the car if you need something from the other side!

Luckily one would never know I have done this but at the time I was really annoyed with myself.

That cutout is for the optional passenger ejector seat controls planned for the 2016 model.

I wish somebody would offer a drop in trinket tray for that space. I'd be the first in line to purchase it.

Thanks Matty,
I will leave it till the winter. Don't want to waste valuable Autumn driving time!

There's only a slight dip in the leather but it still annoys me that its there.

Only mentioned it on here to warn others.

Isn't the 'trinket tray' cutout designed to make the moulding backward-compatible with the 2012 gear lever position?

I have the bespoke German narrow console in my 2013. It gives me a few inches of thigh room and has a great little tray I use for my garage opener...

Nice. Makes you wonder why the standard one is so chunky...
