Lovely day in Hampshire on Sunday. Took the side screens off and drove from Wickham, up the A31 to Alresford. Stopped at the Bush Inn at Ovington for lunch (superb as always), then back the same way.

The Bush had its fair share of Porsche Boxsters, Audi / BMW / Mercedes convertibles..... But it was the Mog that turned the heads!

These things are not cheap, so they must raise enough revenue to pay back the installation and running costs.

Or are they just empty boxes, installed to bluff?

There is one in Dorset near Three Legged Cross that must be so, because this year vegetation has grown over the face of it completely covering the camera and flash windows. It cannot be seen at all and has been like that for at least 3 months.

Yes it was good to be out. And I'm also enjoy fabricating brackets to fit the new/second hand luggage rack rather than buy expensive factory or dealer brackets. That Australian pub behind the opera is known as Crossfields and it does quite a good job of impersonating an aussie pub. Except for the fact that almost no pub in Australia sells grilled grasshoppers and roo burgers. The pub is owned by the same people who own Cafe Landtmann and their name is Kreuzfeld - hence Crossfields. If you go there say G'day to Kim, the bar manager, a lovely aussie sheila who married an Austrian.

Peter it's common practice to erect the boxes and move the cameras from one to another.

There are a lot of old boxes (little concrete or steel pillboxes) and fake boxes (bright orange) in Italy. Just to keep you on your toes they occasionally set up a nice modern portable system hidden by the old or fake boxes.

Fortunately for me this is not so common.

The cameras have succeeded in making people stick to the speed limits. But, they now pull out in front of cars cruising along because "they are only doing 30" - had several near misses on that stretch of road when I used to visit crumblies in Cheddleton on a regular basis. Fortunately, they now live a lot closer.

I believe some local authorities have pretty much pulled out of keeping the big yellow box speed cameras working

Drivers must think.
Blindly following road signs reduces the need to think and in my view takes away responsibility from drivers.

I stick to 20 and 30 mph limits everywhere, 100% No deviation at all.
I stick to 40 mph limits in urban areas, mostly.
Observing speed limits is what cruse control is for.....

I have a problem understanding why country roads where previously the national limit applied now have 40mph and 50mph limits. Wiltshire Council has reduced speed limits on miles of roads. An examination of public data here in Wiltshire showed that in all cases where the limits have been reduced there is no history of accidents. So why are they there?

All they serve to do is frustrate and encourage lack of respect for limits that matter.
