The chap I have spoken to in parts a few times never sounds merry to me

He never makes things easy

Denies that the part you are after exists and/or when you point out that it's in the catalogue or on line then tells you it won't fit your car

I find it all a bit painful

Where can I buy these "U rubbers"? Can't find them anywere.

You need to be a little careful with these rubbers as I know from experience.

Before these rubbers became standard the position of the sidescreens may not necessarily have been set so as to give sufficient clearance. If the space is too little the outer lip is simply caught and folded in under the front edge of the sidescreen. One side was ok but the other was a tiny fraction too close to the windscreen pillar. I just managed to get enough clearance by loosening all the screws and pushing the sidescreen back as far as possible whilst tightening them again.

The problem side was the first one that I fitted and I decided to remove the rubber and re-fit it later. The double sided tape held so well that it pulled nearly all the grey coating off that part of the windscreen pillar. I had a lot of trouble finding the correct double adhesive tape to fit it again and I now have a roll long enough for a lifetime supply. Fortunately the re-fitted rubber covers all of the missing grey coating.

I'm not exactly sure how it is fitted at the factory, but I decided to fit it over the existing old seal because that brought it out flush with the outer edge of the pillar, and I carefully trimed a litle of the inner corner at the bottom two inches to keep it flush. I had reviously removed the bottom 2 inches of the old seal too After it was fitted I used a very sharp blade to trim the bottom to extend the line of the bottom of the pillar. I also found that the rubber tended to pull away from the pillar where it bends so I squeezed in a couple of drops of Super Glue and held it in place for a few minutes. That seems to have held ok.

Finally I made some adjustments to the bend of the sidescreen brackets. In effect I eased the screen out a little at the top front so as not to put too much pressure in the rubber at the top of the pillars. This moved the top out a little over the entire length so I adjusted the bend in the rear bracket and brought the sidescreen in a little at the top at the back to bring it back against the hood.

The end effect is very good with a generally flush fitting of the rubber and sidescreen to the windscreen pillars. If (when?) I have to replace them I would do it the same way and fit it so all bar the bottom 2 inches was doubled in thickness so as the bring the outer edge flush with the outer face of the pillar.
