I went for a drive in the mountains today, top down. It was a sunny, dry day, fairly warm for November 1st, though the air temperature dropped noticeably and the road surface was damp on north-facing descents.
After a few miles, I noticed that the multi-function dial (fuel gauge/water temp/oil pressure) had misted up internally. Then a while later, the speedo did the same thing. A few miles further on, they both cleared.
Nothing to worry about, of course, but do they all do that?

A couple of my smaller gauges misted up this morning driving to Cheshire in the fog
It also happened with a few more dials late last year when I set off early one morning in sun after a damp night
It's just moisture condensing on the inside of the cold glass
It will happen to any gauge that isn't completely sealed from atmospheric moisture
I had the same thing happen a few times in a wrist watch where the seal had perished

Lots of posts on this site suggesting fixes but I don't think any worked for long. Funny though how I've never had a clock mist up like my morgan in all the rag tops and motor bikes I've owned over the years. Mine has Smiths clocks which probably was a spin off from Lucas.
Best suggestion was to park with the rear of the car facing any sun that's shining. Someone suggested that should be included in the owners handbook.

Best suggestion was to park with the rear of the car facing any sun that's shining. Someone suggested that should be included in the owners handbook. A hair-drier plugged into the socket should do the job.

The moisture condensation inside the instruments is something I never experienced with any other car/bike/tractor than my Morgan4/4. Even the M3W does not have misty dials - but they are VDO production.
Smiths instruments - another example of special craftmanship?

Mine regularly mist up - they did over the weekend... My speedo had quite big water droplets in at one point.
I would have thought that the dials arrive as sealed units to MMC - but I have no idea. I've never had a car or motorcycle do it before.

Mine seem not to suffer in this way.
The car lives in a garage that is attached to the house and is fully insulated. So most of the time it is warm and dry.
Also, when I leave the car hood up I make sure the windows are open. But mostly I have the hood down.
