True, but you don't have to pay BMW / Main Dealer prices if you don't wish to, you could get a set of Bosch pads for 40 quid from a factor that would fit fine (assuming they use the same pads as a 6-series, which is a pretty fair bet I would think)

An interesting thread Peter and whilst at my friendly Morgan dealer the other day the topic of Aero servicing/running costs came up, mainly as there was a rather nice Aero 2.5 there(series 2 with series 3 engine and bits). Anyway with an average 6K a year you can expect bills of £2-2.5K per annum, without tyres or fuel. The discussion we had was along the line of its a 160+mph super car so this is to be expected. I am not surprised and fits with my experience with Ferraris. Porsche can be more a little more controlled but those I owned generally averaged £1500 per year, as long as nothing went wrong, a 944 Turbo gearbox rebuild by a specialist 20 years ago cost me £5K, half of it was replaced and labour was £35/hour. Some years it is less other more.

Just because its a Morgan does not mean its cheap to run.

I don't think anyone suggests because it's a Morgan it ought to be cheap to run.. But it can be made a lot cheaper by those that enjoy and are willing to do their own work. Often the biggest factor in price is the labour content...and many service tasks are easy enough. Fitting pads is one of them..

Sorry lads i dont quite get it,Peter has a yearly service on a new plus 8 for just over 400 quid my mate takes his roadster with 4k on the clock to the same dealer and is charged nearly 500.To cap it all they then say it costs from 2 to 2.5 k to run an Aero,somebody has got their sums wrong or giveing the customer and potential new owner miss information.I stuck a new set of front pads on the car around feb time and they were around sixty quid.Lets not put people off buying a mog.

I have to replace the oil pressure switch on the aero 8 which is a tricky job. But I plan to do it myself over its winter layup. Quite looking forward to it.

I think ultimately running any car is always going to be down to whether one is prepared to take on some of the effort (and risk) oneself, thereby reducing the cost, or accepting that one lacks the necessary skills, equipment, or time and thereby paying someone else to do it.

I recently bought a new Fiat 500 TwinAir for 'er indoors. I was faced with a choice: Buy one from a main dealer and get the no-hassle warranty but pay main dealer prices, or buy it from a car supermarket, service it myself, and accept that I might have warranty hassles should I have to claim.

In the event, the decision was easy. The main dealer price was £14,600 and I would have to wait 3 months, the supermarket price was £10,200 and I could have it that day. 6 months later, the car is fine, I don't foresee any problems, and my local back-street garage reckons he can get hold of any software updates for me should they be needed.

Tim, my understanding is that a dealer cannot deny you a warranty claim because you or another carries out the servicing. The onus is on the warranty company to prove the work done or parts used were the cause of the claim. If you follow the manufacturers schedule and recommended parts you are on pretty safe ground. Unhelpful,they may be but they cannot in law refuse you.

Still we find owners that feel they must use main dealers to maintain their warranty.

I have friend who runs his own garage and for any car he services that's within warrenty, he always sources the parts from the main dealer.

I have had the S2 for a number of years now and it has never cost anything like that. I had a bad moment where the rad/exchanger and pump for the AirCon needed replacement but outside of that the annual servicing (Mog approved or well known dealer with reputation) has been less than £700 year.

The tyres are likely to need replacement through age before milage on the S2 which I am embarrassed about. Should use it a lot more but the job is making this more difficult. I don't wheelspin but I do give it some boot.

If you are only doing 5000-9000 miles and don't do track days I don't see what can cause a £1500 bill ? Having said that I have whacked two sumps and they add to it pretty quickly.
