In Aus you can get black and white plates legally (OK for a fee...). The reflection quality is quite outstanding. Why can the same materials not be used in the UK? Richard I have the new silver on black plates and what intrigues me is that when photographed with a flash they appear negative (or positive) depending on your polarity! So the authorities still have a good handle on you. Nick

That's the same part though isn't it? It's the same message that was given in the FBHVC newsletter... Vehicles that can display black and silver plates
Since April 2015 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1975 can display the older style plates.
Vehicles not registered in the historic tax class
If you’re not registered within the historic class you can’t display the black and silver number plates.Apart from the person who responded to your tweet, the DVLA seem to be certain on this. I mentioned it to the mechanic who serviced my 4/4 yesterday and he told me he would still have to fail a car newer than 1973 bearing black & white plates because the MOT testers' handbook hadn't changed. ~iw

Well i guess you're right-although the person who answered the tweet was in no doubt about the accuracy of their information. Next step then is to get them to update the MOT tester's handbook!

It doesn't say black and silver plates will be rolled forward to all 40 year old cars. It says tax exemption will be rolled forward, that's a different thing altogether.
It says cars registered before 1st of Jan 1975 can have black and silver plates. NOT all cars as they reach 40 years.

I can understand where this confusion has come from
It is totally misleading
Why the DVLA have chosen to link the black and silver plate explaination in the same articles as the 40 year rolling tax exemption explanation is beyond me
It is a completely separate issue
It should say that silver and black plates can be used on vehicles first registered on or before 1975 and unlink it from any mention of this rolling 40 year tax exemption scheme

In my opinion I think it is confusing too, bearing in mind that all vehicles had to be fitted with reflective plates registered on or after 1 January 1973 and now they say vehicles up until 31 December 1974 can display black and silver ones even though they weren't legal at the time. Am I missing something?
