So its the Cayman GT4 that wins , against such cars as a Ferrari 488 , Porsche GT3 RS , but isn't it rather similar to the 911 to be a separate model - same engine , some body panels may be the same too ?

No it's a Boxter with a roof and is mid engined, rather different to a 911 Adrian , good to meet up at the museum visit , and now knowing your experience with various cars what is the difference between a Cayman and a 911 - is a 911 now out driven by a GT4 ?

The Cayman platform has always been the junior platform to the 911, as it is being the offspring of the Boxster.
However many have felt that the mid engine configure of the Cayman lends itself to a better drive with a properly mud mounted engine. This naturally provides s better handling setup than o e with a heavy engine having out the back.
50+ years of evolution have seen the 911 become a fabulously capable sports car, and make a virtue of being rear engined, it's also become a style of driving that has endeared itself to enthusiasts who are looking to hone their skills - and a platform that has some challenge to it because it is technically deficient has provided that challenge to many (me included).
Because if this it remains the flagship product - not because it's the best solution for driving fast.
I think it's safe to say that most drivers will be faster in an equally powered Cayman than a 911 along any given road / track because the mid engine configuration is easier to drive. Porsche have never allowed power equality though as it could erode the brand and following the 911 has..

The 911 just like my boxer engined bike, is a triumph of development over design. The 911 engine is in the wrong place and reflects the Porsche origin as a tuned up VW Beetle.
The Cayman / Boxer is a modern design but Porsche have long had the same business issue as BMW with the boxer engined bikes and Harley with the pushrod V twin. Customers have an attachment to the old design and attempts to kill it and move on are resisted. Porsche tried to move on with the 928. BMW did so with the K series. Harley has the V Rod - none of these succeeded.
Having driven both the current Boxter and 911 I would not give either of them the "drivers car of the year " badge. Both are too well refined and I didnt find them engaging. My current little Lotus ( yes the one I'm looking to replace) is far more of a drivers car. But it has to be said that I didnt drive the GT4 version of the Porker and the GTS version was undoubtedly more fun than the standard car. Appealed to the inner boy racer!
The Morgan Plus 8 is more of a true sports car than either of them though no doubt it would lose out badly in any sort of race.
I do wonder about the Boxter Spyder though. Looks good to me.

I've driven both a 3.0 911 and a 993 - and between the 2 you could feel the evolution, the steady handling improvements the beginning of the dialing out of some of the characteristics which defined the car and made it such a challenge. High speed mid-corner surface changes are bloody horrible - and once that nose starts bobbing - grrrrrrr. What they both represented were driving challenges - cars that didn't weren't set up to drive the same way as everything else. I don't necessarily "get" them but I appreciate where they have got to in terms of development. Back in the day I'd have killed for a GT3RS - now I'm more GT3  The dynamic challenges are one reason why I found the Supersport so interesting - without ARBs you have to alter your approach to a sequence of corners, you have to be cogniscent of lateral weight transfers and pre-plan your choice of lines. It makes a quick drive far more cerebral. To a "non-believer" the Boxster and Cayman come across as quite "Gran Turismo".

I've had a couple of modern 911's and a couple of boxsters. I've also been to the porsche experience centre at Silverstone quite a few times where you get to thrash the nuts off the whole range. The boxster/cayman platform is fantastic……… but, just a bit boring.
The 911 is possible just a right of passage, an itch that needs scratching for many men. This can often be seen by the high number of owners compared with the age of many cars. Even if you're driving the best boxster, if you see a 911 you just can't help wanting one.
I did go to the pcgb annual gathering a few years ago. Soulless. almost like a supermarket car park. Even SWMBO thought it was boring. Thankfully she loves Morgans.
I could be tempted by an early 70's 911…………...

I have never made friends with the 911 up to the 996 series. I have not driven anything more recent. I have driven the Cayman a couple of times and found it more fun to push on roads and light track work. For 90% of my driving time I would prefer a Cayman.
I loved the 928GT and have had a couple of 968CS models which were just fantastic value and driving machines.
I do want to have a go in a current or just passed 911 GT3 or turbo at some point as the reports do seem to indicate they have removed the slightly freaky edge of the envelope that some seem to love. More power to them, I respect their desire to trim the hedges !
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Do the Evo team understand character in a car , its not just speed and handling but charisma ! Mogs have it in spades but they think Mogs are a bit odd.

The Cayman GT4 is a fabulous real-world drivers cars and has huge grin factor. It is the first Cayman to have more power than the base 911 and, for a Porsche GT car, is 'relatively' affordable.
As an ownership proposition it also makes a degree of sense: Demand is high and early cars are trading at circa £25K over list price. Whilst this is sure to settle down, depreciation may be negligible for some time to come.
I hope to be able to compare to the ARP4 at some point!
