My other half is asking me what I want for Christmas and as usual things for the garage/ workshop are in the forefront.

I have always fancied a Dremell with associated bits of kit as I think one could be quite useful.

Are they robust or do they burn out like cheap electric drills. Anyone have experience of using them?

I have a dremel, my second one, the first was destroyed by too much fine metallic dust getting inside. It is a useful tool to have but for only very fine/light work, probably a good model makers tool.

I have used a Dremel for years.
It is a very useful little tool for all different fine work including polishing and metal cutting. It seems to be much more robust than similar China imports. Can strongly recommend it.

Dremels are good, but I find they have limited use in a garage environment. If my OH was offering to buy me a tool, I'd go for an impact driver like the Kielder KWT-002.

Although admittedly these are quite a bit more expensive than even a top of the range Dremel, you could always try the 'Don't you think I'm worth it?' expression

If you do go for a Dremel, get a genuine one, the cheap copies really are pretty poor in comparison.

Thanks All, They sound a useful tool to have in the armoury if only for more delicate work. I have an impact driver Tim as you say a very useful tool.

I have used my Dremel for all sorts of things it wasn't designed for.A Super tool.

I bought one recently after wanting one for years. The price has now come down quite a bit from what they used to be about 20 years ago. It is one of those tools that you don't use often but when you have a job on which you can use it it is invaluable.

Totally agree, a great piece of kit, but do go for the real thing.

Picked up a new one a model 3000 in Homebases half price sale for £30, paid nearly that for a 90 degree drive for it. My original one is 20 years old but only the chuck is a little worn and anyway I could not fit a 90 degree drive on it. Superb and useful for dozens of jobs on a car but you have to use common sense as they are high speed with very low torque so if you use it crudely they will burn out, use as its intended and they are fine. Makes short work of polishing the fuel cap oxidation on my 08 car! Worth it just for that.

Bought mine about a year ago to do some intricate sanding - with mixed success. Since then have cut the heads off two screws to affix to a badge which, in turn, is stuck with number plate tape to my dashboard, giving the effect of having been screwed on. And that's it. Very limited applications in the garage. Others will disagree, but I have found it a pi$$-willy piece of kit. It may be on eBay soon.
