Having had a long hard think......also being prompted by the wife, the m4w stays and I've abandoned the m3w idea on grounds of practicality ooo

You can always hire one if the urge surfaces again.

I would never sell a "good weather car" in autumn or winter. The sunny days in spring are the best for a good price.
In nowadays world I never sell a car to a dealer but private by using free internet sales channels. I sold 3 GoldWings that way and always got a reasonable price, better than any trade in offer and I have not returned a car to a dealer for the last 15years either but used internet advertising to sell it.
Maybe other countries have other sales traditions but here it works quite well that way.

As others have proposed: rent a M3W if you are temted to drive one.

Good decision. Always strap the dog to the luggage rack I suppose?
