Fuel injection doesn't vapor lock in the classic sense. When over filled, you get an engine check light for the evaporative system and several hundred miles of slightly rough running. The check light eventually goes away.

Make sure the fuel tank vent is working and you aren't creating a vacuum when the engine is running. It may be connected to a return hose from the fuel pump, or it may simply be a hose venting to the outside air pressure, possibly with a check valve to prevent leakage in the event of a vehicle roll-over.

Hello Guys, Sorry I've been away from the PC the last couple of days. Thanks for all your comments - there really is a wealth of helpful information and experiences within the TM collective. The easiest thing for me to tackle first is probably the fuel pump (I have already purchased, but not yet fitted a new fuel filter). I know that the item from Morgan is circa £400.00, but I can see that there appear to be cheaper alternatives/copies. Which is replacement have you used & where from? Prior to this I need to test the system pressure, where is the valve - I've looked and couldn't see one near the injectors, also what type of gauge do you use? My exhausts do get very hot, very quickly - the headers will glow after only a couple of minutes of idling from cold. To try and reduce the heat build up and improve general running/breathing, I have today collected the MMC stage 1 kit from Malvern - my thinking is that the gases will exit more quickly & the engine management/mixture will function better - not being strangled by the air filter.
I don't think the problem is a venting issue - I have tried with the cap removed - makes no difference.
I did think that maybe in running the tanks so low (210miles) and refilling, I might have stirred up some debris from the bottom of the tanks which was blocking or impeding the fuel supply somewhere - which is why I thought about the fuel filter?
The car has never shown the engine management light (unless I missed it!).
You mention a local (to me) S & S engine specialist - please forward details. If the fuel pump & or filter aren't the culprits, then I may need his help.
Can I ask a further question - my headers are a long way from shiny stainless, has anybody had theirs ceramic or similar coated. If so what are your thoughts.
Thanks again - I eagerly await your thoughts.
Andrew

Hi Andrew, Whether it's the filter being clogged or the pump failing, that would lead to the mixture being very lean so that would produce a lot of extra heat, hence the glowing pipes. I would say that getting the pipes to glow with just a short spell of idling does not sound good to me and needs sorted out. If everything is basically working correctly then going from standard to the Stage 1 pipes and filter does cut a lot of the heat so everything runs better but if the fuel supply is compromised then who knows what happens. The S&S specialist is Matts Machine Shop, the website isn't really up and running but has a phone number and email address. I think there is a port on the high pressure part of the fuel lines at the throttle body but don't know for sure; haven't had to check mine! There has been at least one thread about which pump fits but I haven't been able to find it - have a feeling it may be one from an X5 but really not sure - hopefully someone will be along soon who has done the job. Best of luck getting it sorted out.

Thanks Calum/RedThree,
I will look up the details for Matts Machine Shop. I should mention that my M3W is a very early example (004) so I presume the exhaust & headers will be only 1mm thick - maybe this means the headers glow sooner? By the way, love your M3W photos - brilliant Andrew.

Fuel filter is X5 (Mahle KL167) The fuel pump I think is from a Landcover Discovery.

I'm having a hard time removing all the silicone on the fuel pump dirt cover. Oh and does the cover come off in one or two pieces? The factory layered the silicone on very heavy and I can not get to the hose ends. Also advise on what tool to use on the hose end couplings (sockets?) where the hoses couple to the pump. Thanks for the Mahle number.

My cover was in two pieces. The centre one can't come off until the hoses do. Lots of gunk holding the plastics down.
I never could get the hoses off, the car had to go to the local shop. Apparently they are fairly standard couplings, but they wouldn't budge.
An interesting fact: the mechanic didn't use any silicone putting it back together. He didn't even know about it. Don't the the dealers and official Morgan shops have a manual? I can understand that we aren't supposed to have one, but they should.
M3W, now!!!
