I had the brilliant idea to wash my floor carpets and discovered that I had destroyed the stiffening in the backing and they kept bunching up under my feet. Luckily, knowing that I am heavy on carpets I had ordered a spare set with the car. If all else fails it is always possible to put two more press studs at the front of the carpets.

Stewart, Please stay safe. The rest will dry out with time, even the cars. I have good friends and members of my Morgan Club just there in Helmshore Rossendale, Lancashire. My hope is that they have survived the waters without too much drama. As others have offered. If there is anything we can help with, please don't hesitate.

The Dallas tornado made the UK TV and Radio news: a sobering reminder that the natural world can be a very dangerous place and we humans cannot take anything for granted.

Fantastic team spirit in York..everybody pitching in to help traders and homeowners.
Mountain Rescue teams from Swaledale and Cumbria doing house to house to check/rescue people + animals.

Army + all emergency services doing great job and v appreciated by locals..very humblimg to see one's fellow man helping another in a bad situation.

Went over to village of Cawwd yesterday to help sandbag for 12 hours..village saved for the moment.

Bit of respite now till Wednesday or until the waters come down from the Dales.

Sorry to read your news Stewart. It must be really dreadful, but you appear to be showing great spirit under what must be really awful circumstances.
It's so true what Peter just commented about how we can't take anything for granted.

I tend to consider myself as very fortunate to be living on high ground, although I remember a few years ago I was touring through North Yorkshire on my way up to Scotland and about 20 miles south of Alston I ran into a very heavy storm. Water was running off the hillsides and across the road at an incredible rate. The going got tougher by the mile as the roads became more and more flooded.
When I arrived at the top of the village of Alston, I noticed there were two fire engines parked up outside a row of cottages. we decided to take a break at one of the hotels in the village and I asked a local about the fire engines and was told that the water had been running off the hillside at such a rate that the cottages on the higher ground were hit by so much water that they had flooded. Apparently it was a fairly common occurrence when the rain was extremely heavy and prolonged and that the fire crew try to limit the amount of flood damage by opening both front and rear doors of the properties and let the water just run through rather than fill up!!

We had a traumatic trip back from Devon in October about fifteen years ago with similar experiences. A gridlocked motorway which flooded that night. We set off across country but every slope had a raging torrent coming off the fields, and every railway bridge with a dip was a challenge. Every river bridge had a raging torrent below. Fortunately we had a (Rover) hire car and it was excellent through deep water. The journey though took over twice as long as usual and we really should have waited. It was a miserable experience.

Just had the firebrigade round to the house just keeping us up to date with storm Frank on its way and they are delivering good news in that the work to seal the breach in the river Douglas is going well and that Frank is not expected to be anywhere near as bad as Boxing Day

Apparently the firebrigade are pumping off 40 million litres of water in every 12 hours off our neighbouring fields !!!
