I am planning on putting a modern alternator in my 1953 +4 Flat Rad to improve the drive-ability. I put a Bosch alternator from a 1980 Ford Fiesta in my TR6 and an AC Delco alternator in my negative ground Triumph TR3 and have been very happy with both. I wonder if there will be clearance problems with the alternator conversion under the bonnet. Does anyone know if there is an optimal alternator to use on a flat rad? I have seen the alternators that look like generators, but those prices! I can't afford that. I am thinking that the 55 amp alternator from the Fiesta looks smallest and like it will be a better fit. Heresy aside, maybe a modern Nippon Denso might be the most effective alternator conversion.

I would be interested in this as well. Let me know what you decide.

Cheers,

Many small modern cars (think Honda)have compact alternators that would be suitable. Most new cars use a ribbed belt which won't work for your car but older ones used a vee belt. Be sure it rotates in the correct direction. This is just a function of the cooling fan blades; it will charge in either direction.
hope this helps.
regards,
Phil
