Hi,

Yet again I have attempted to take the seal belt retractors out of my car for refurbishment without success. The access through the spare wheel aperture is impossible with the size of my hands. Also the retrator appears to be fixed with a single bolt but the bolt/nut just spins when I get the spanner on it.

Has anybody out there done this job, or is aware of special equipment, as it seem to be one of those jobs that was only possible when building the car.

Thanks

Phil

I've looked at this Phil and it looks impossible. I don't know where you are but if I was about to try this I would ring Keith at Brands Hatch Morgans and ask his advice. I know it's possible but I've no idea how it's done.

An alternative I've considered is to cut a hole in the sloping panel in the cockpit, and fit a new aluminium cover plate when the job is done.

Why not just remove the rear sloping panel?
Its only held in with self tapping screws

Really? I hadn't looked closely but that's well worth knowing.

I talked to Williams about this as on the Roadster one of the seatbelts was frayed.
I was told that it is easy when you know how, but has to be done "blind" as both bolt head and nut are invisible....Small strong hands are needed as is a "special" ratchet ring spanner.
Best left to the experts.

Morgan, bless them, fit the belt retractor before panelling the body frame.....!!

I took a few shots in the factory today. The alloy rear panel is held on with a few screws and should be removable. I couldn't see any screws from the spare wheel well holding the bottom part. The current cars of course may differ from the earlier ones!

Thanks everyone.

I've made a special spanner to hold the bolt and think I can get another spanner on the nut. First attemp I lost the special spanner inside the frame somewhere so had to take car out and do a couple of emergency stops to shake it loose. Now I've fixed a chord to the spanner and when I calm down I'll have another go. Concentrating on the passenger side in case I fail and have to drive it to the experts. The £180 quote is getting more attractive by the day!

Thanks again

Phil
