The yellow "Engine" light has come on.

4 Errors, but really 2 pairs...

P0150 $07E8 02 Sensor Circuit Bank 2, Sensor 1
P2247 $07E8 02 Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit Open Bank 2 Sensor 1

Repeated each start up

From looking at BMW forums it seems this isn't exactly uncommon and Sensor 1 is the pre-cat sensor, not sure if Bank 1 is left side or right side...

One of the Lambda post cat sensors was replaced under warranty last year. It seems to me that now the pre-cat sensor has failed.

Does anyone have any other suggestions but "take it back to the dealer" ?

I had similar problems with my plus 8, both pre cat sensors replaced under warranty and no problems since, touch wood.

No specifics Peter but have you just refuelled the car? Clutching at straws but just wondering if it's like the GEMS system on the later +8's, they are very sensitive to overfilling, mine did it all the time. I am sure you know but just in case remember pre cat sensors are used for fuel trim and post cat sensors are used to confirm cat operation (simplified but that's a good starting point). From that and considering what they actually do then it would suggest that the code reading shows an over fuel on one bank as likely......that may not however actually mean over fuelling! What it most often means is an excess of HC on one bank (unburned fuel). The adaptive system will have tried to reduce the injector pulse width but it's adaptive window is limited and once you drop below a specific Ms signal then the MIL light comes on and a code is stored. Over fueling affects the HC as when the purge valve is opened for the carbon canister it draws fuel rather than fumes into the plenum chamber.

If, and fingers crossed for you, it's like a GEMS then a few drive cycles can reset the light (but not erase the code). Other possibilities if you have not just topped the fuel tank to look at are cat and or sensor heat up time (if you have heated Lambda sensors the heating elements can often fail, the system ignores the cold start signal but if the sensor is not at operating temperature it would give the correct voltage signal to the ECU.

Not a lot you can do yourself other than bang in a few drive cycles and if the light does not reset then your right in your guess it's a back to dealer jobbie......good luck!

Sadly, not.

It came on the first time on the run back from the very wet meet at Biscester with about half a tank of fuel on board. Since then I've filled up, it didn't come on, but has since it has come on at engine start, and then after half an hour or so it goes out.

All very odd.

Sorry Peter, sounds like a dealer visit is in order.....from what you describe I would suspect water in or corrosion of the Lambda wiring plug where it connects to the main harness. As the system is looking for a reading in the range of 0.9v-1.1v it does not take a lot to corrupt the signal, you did not mention the car going into 'Limp Mode' so that's where I would start....fingers crossed for you.

That is what I was wondering....

At least the Warranty runs until 2 April 2016....

Oh that's good news, a result, I normally have things fail the day after a warranty runs out.

Swap sensors over between sides and see if the fault transfers, in which case the sensor itself I have some lambda sensor spanners here should you wish to borrow them.

If fault stays on same side then the connection is iffy from it to the ecu somewhere.
