Regarding the autophoretic chassis, if buying new I would get the chassis fully under sealed, particularly against stone impacts, and then not worry about it.
I did this with the galvanised chassis when I bought new.

Can someone remind us - did the axle ratio change when the Mazda gearbox was introduced?

Paul, as much as I know, the axle ratio kept the same (3.7). But the first and second gear of the Mazda box is significantly shorter which means that the car feels much more effortless when starting. Beside the fact, that the Mazda gear box is a pleasure to handle, on the other hand the gap between second and third is quite noticable. This is because somehow the Madzda box also has to reach 1:1 at forth.
With the older Ford box I guess it was more an easy decision to swap for a 4.1:1 ratio. The gears were closer together and all in sum felt too long (my theory I never drove such a car), and it was about right with the 4.1:1 ratio.
With the Mazda box I would worry, that first and second gear become too short when changing the axle ratio for a shorter one. And nothing is more unconvenient than a too short first and second, as I know from my Roadster I had before.

My solution was a manifold which delivers additonal torque and all feels right. I have no more the wish for a shorter axle ratio, because now the third makes it's job as a plausible follower...and fifth is suddenly good to use wihout the need to gear down.

To add, I think because of all the above said regarding the Mazda gear box ratios the new ARP4 uses a 3.9:1 rear axle and not a 4.1:1 axle. It must be a sweet compromise/good solution, because she will compensate the short Mazda first and second by her ability to rev higher but she is not confronted with a 4.1 ratio.

I understand that the new finish ( non-galv) chassis will be still be under-sealed with wax protection by the factory. In the case of the red finished ARP4s chassis its clear wax.

yes, I have the 4/4 "Vorführer" @ German Morgan Park on my watch list as well... that one looks nice, from 2015, so nearly new.

One additional question: What do you think about the Plus 4 "Narrow Body"? I like the line of the 4/4, so this "should" be a great combination - 2.0l engine and the nice classic line of the car.

I have a 2013 narrow bodied + 4 with the 2.0 Duratec engine, limited slip diff and Avon CRZZ 6 tyres. It's awesome, engine loosened up around 10k. Acceleration is quicker than published, it's very nimble and the tyres stick like glue. Much better now with the brake reaction bars, they have tightened the whole front end.

Hi vinyllover - I have a plus 4 narrow body and love it. I like the classic looks. I drove a second hand 4/4 with the ford gearbox then the plus 4. The combination of a bit more oomph and the Mazda gearbox with the classic profile made me buy the narrow body plus 4. I haven't regretted it.
