Ah yes...... but autos still have gearwheels, arranged like overdrive units back to back. The big difference is that engagement is progressive - often by friction cones, but the activation is electro/pneumatic as I understand it.
So there's more technology to go wrong. I wouldn't mind having an auto box to pieces for a look inside...........

checked my LEGO-Technics, but the full-working gearbox there is a manual, would send it toward you if it was autobox

Updating my earlier post of symptoms - here is the diagnosis.

Firstly, some very kind and valuable input from Mogsport and Brian Miller at High Wycombe. Without even going for a test drive the initial reaction of "that doesn't sound right" became a tentative diagnosis that the dual mass flywheel was at fault.

Today, have returned from a meeting with Mark Baldwin at Malvern, who wanted to have a listen when everything was hot and 'loose'. Started with a road test and as I reversed out of the parking space he quickly explained all the chattering noises. However as we proceeded the explanations died away as Mark crouched closer to the gearbox holding on to the lever and listening intently. Back to the Works and the car was whisked off for a second opinion and further road test.

Diagnosis.....the dual mass flywheel!!!
Car is driveable but something is wrong and Morgan will have the car back in December to fit a replacement and presumably check all is well with the rest of the transmission.

Hopefully then the Chatter will be reduced to a low murmer

I have just read the post on how a gearbox works and remembering you comment about the differential and various other detailed posts I have read.

I bow to your superior knowledge on these things mechanical.

Have you worked as an Auto Engineer or is this just the accumulated experience and interest from a life's work doing your own car maintainance

It all started in 1971 when I bought a Ford Anglia for £22-10s and stripped it on the front lawn. I needed an engine for my daily driver. All the spares were stored in the shed. The rotten shell was taken by the binmen after I hacksawed it into manageable chunks. I slipped them ten bob. The engine was fitted with minimal tools, and a tow behind an Austin Cambridge.
Suspension expertise came from MG - first leaf springs, then lever arms, then kingpins. A steep learning curve. I upgraded lever arms with diff oil. This gave a solid ride on frosty mornings which eased with heat. Engine rebuilds followed, then making up small repair panels from sheet steel, and finally gearbox & diff rebuilding (and fitting screens) with the BV8 in 1990/1. All self taught - but I have an engineering gene obviously.
