Just wondering if anyone has experience or views on using a Suction Mount RAM Ball Head on their dashboard? I have used RAM Ball Mounts in the past on motorcycle handlebars, but they have all be the 'U Clamp' type and as such very secure.

I thought that I might be able to use my existing extension arm and holder for my Garmin GP62S in the Morgan if I could attach it via the suction cup. I don't want to fix it to the screen as it will clutter the view so I thought that fixing it to the dash or glove compartment lid (biggest single clear space for a 3" diameter base)might work. I just wonder how it would cope with the sticking to the surface and the vibrations of the car.

This is the sort of thing I am hoping to try:

Grateful for your views and experience.

I use a similar suction mount in the painted dash of my Roadster. It's very secure and hasn't damaged the paint.

Jays,

That's encouraging and re-assuring to know. I don't suppose the wood veneer on my dash will behave any differently to the paint on yours so it has to be worth giving it a go - I am very reluctant to drill and fit permanent mounts etc so the suction route seemed the simplest alternative.

Thank you.

I have used my Garmin standard suction cup on the glove compartment lid for a couple of years with no problems. Mind you the finish to my dash is just like glass. I have tried a bean bag mount on the tunnel but it is difficult to see if it placed where there is no reflection. I advise you spend a couple of quid for a sunshade they do work.

Like Jays I use a suction mount on my painted dash, it's from a Tom Tom though but similar idea. I was unsure of paint damage so I first applied a square of 'Defendall' the stuff that's used for paint chip protection. This way the protection is almost invisible and there is zero risk of paint damage, it can be removed in the same way as on bodywork, gently heat first with a hot air gun, I have the same stuff on my sills and change it every few years, no damage so far.

I also use a suction cup mount for my Garmin. On the walnut veneer dash of my 4/4 it fits just to the right of the glove-box lid. (Photo of dash below)
Travelled all over France - no problems or marks on the dash.
I also have the power lead (from the cigar lighter in the glove box) threaded through and tucked away under the dash.

I use a Garmin suction cup mount fixed under the dash between the steering wheel and transmission tunnel. I found the rubber cup marked the paint on my dash and had to be polished out. Depends on the paint I suppose.

I have used a suction mount for my satnav on the veneered dash of my Roadster for some years without any deleterious effect.

I brought a plastic self adhesive plate from Halfords (75p) that's designed to provide a good airtight surface for satnav. This I've stuck to the plastic trim beneath the dashboard above the transmission tunnel. Using the suction cup mount on my TomTom this allows the display to be located neatly over the tunnel in front of the radio. You need to set if reasonably far back to stop touching the screen when changing gear (1st, 3rd and 5th).
Its low down, unobtrusive and down there it's generally shaded from the light, most of the time I just listen to the voice commands with a quick glance if necessary. Its location however is very close to the power socket, so you can buy a short power lead to eliminate wires in the foot well.
