For a great deal of music of course, what you're actually listening to is what the engineers have decided to create as a 'soundstage'. The days in which musicians actually played together as an ensemble to record are long, long gone, they haven't done that since the 1960s.

I've just bought a couple of Rokit powered studio monitors for a bit of a recording project I'm working on and I have to say I'm blown away by the quality of the sound they produce

I know it's a different job to a pair of HiFi speakers but boy these monitors are great

That's a useful recommendation Stewart. I'm thinking of buying some studio monitors, which size did you go for?

We went for the RP5's in the end

My keyboard shop preferred the 4's , he thought the 4's seemed a bit more focused - he had them toed in on stands at ear height but I went over to a music production shop in Leeds last weekend and their recommendation was very definately the 5's

Plus the reviews seemed to favour the 5's so we went for them

Really pleased we did - I think we paid around £215 for the pair - they were up for £230 or £240 a pair but they were willing do do a little deal which always helps !

I wonder whether HiFi speakers will go down the 'active' route in future as it seems logical if the power can be perfectly balanced with the crossovers and cones

I used a Yamaha SP2060 crossover feeding a two way horn speaker via independent power amps, so to speak an active set up. You can play around with almost everything using this kind of digital crossovers. But again, you have a "digital" system at the end, even when playing vinyl - with all the advantages and disatvantages of digital.
So I sacrified benefits like time delay compensation etc which come along with the digital world ...and currently I'm back with a true analog system, using a passive xover.

Concerning the hifi world speakers, I think, they will go the route of active xover because at some point costs of active integrated amps using a dsp/xover, in a fixed design for a given speaker will become cheaper than a conventional passive set up. A clear benefit for the manufacturer is also that you can easily compensate for given acoustical mistakes, like an average car suspension set up can be "repaired" by using ESP technology. But then again, it is digital, regardless of the source.
