A Morgan mechanic in Auckland, Derek Atkinson will fit chrome hardened pins which he guarantees for 30,000km. He will take delivery of your suspension and ream out and fit new pins and freights back to you to refit. I hope mine last as well as some of the ones mentioned on Talk Morgan. I will grease a lot more often...
Cheers

Hi Johnny Mac

Just to confirm, I had hardened chromed pins fitted 60,000 miles (90k km) ago and they're still going strong.

Greased every 1,000 miles I also have Suplex front suspension - I suspect this helps via the excellent damping it gives to front of car.

Hope this helps

Cheers!

Hello,
meanwhile with just 6000miles mine are "shot"
It will be hard chrome pins for me !
As and when I get around to it !

Hi
That all sounds great. I will await the day I need to change mine. I am up to 18k kilometres and still ok. It seems I should be able to change pins and bearings all reamed to fit for about 250 pounds. Cheers. John

I've followed this topic with interest as I want to replace the king pins etc on my '93 +4. Obviously hard chrome is the way to go. At the same time it would make sense to upgrade the rest of the front suspension and the pros & cons of Suplex & Mulberry have been well aired on this forum but I've found little, if anything, on the Rutherford upgrade. Does anyone have experience of this? Is it now considered 'old hat' being superceded by the above?
Any info gratefully received.

The only Rutherford modifications that I know of relate to the rear springs of a old 4 seater. I have had this modification on My '63 +4-4Str for years. One leaf is removed and the others the ends are cut to match.

OH Yes also re valving a AVO Shock to make it suitable for a Morgan

New Elms have a comprehensive set up for the front, it's independent user experience I'm after. Just to fill in the picture so to speak.
Thanks anyway.

I've had Rutherford AVO'S on my Roadster since 2008, and on the 4/4 Anniversary for two years and I'm very happy with the feel. Plus Mulfab bearings.

Funny you should ask, after a chat with DaveW, mine is booked in at Williams for a full set of Rutherford AVOs a week Thursday, so I will know after then.
I will get them set at 3 all round to begin with.

If the road surfaces were really bad around here, like they are in Bucks, I would consider The Suplex conversion.

David Rutherford was making rear suspension kits for Morgans fitted with Armstrong lever arm dampers and producing negative camber and panhard rod kits from the mid 1970s. In the. late 1980s he was making a replacement rear suspension hoop as an alternative to the Morgan one that was poorly designed and contacted with the diff casing on compression.

For a few years, David used my car as a race development car modifying the chassis, putting in a quick rack and other useful mods. I'm running some axial bearings that David gave me to try in the early 1990s and they're still on the car. I've run the car with the bearings fitted both with and without the damper blades and quite frankly I haven't noticed the difference; it's probably due to the front suspension being properly maintained.

I'm not convinced about fitting front steering bearing kits that incorporate ride height adjustment. The vast majority of people, including Morgan dealers, have insufficient understanding of such set up and the impact on corner weights. Having said this, Morgans are too crude in their chassis and suspension design to warrant such sophisication as anyone who has set up single seater race cars will know.

As for steering dampers, these are merely a mask that hide a fundamental fault in a car's behaviour. Wheel wobble is more likely to be caused by poor maintenance, loose or broken components or deranged geometry caused by an 'off'.

Thank you all for the benefit of your experiences. I'm tempted by the AVOs but not sure about the Mulberry steering bearings and springs.
I had roller bearings (admittedly not quite the same thing but with the same purpose) fitted to my last Morgan, a +8, also an older car and the result was so appalling that what few teeth I have nearly fell out.
So I'm a little reluctant to go down that route.
Anyway, thanks for the information.
Brian
