Again a project of another friend. BTW my buddy Uwe is very happy that he could purchase a top second hand garaged Disco3 black edition 2008 with very low milage today! Thanks again for your help. Now, the drummer of our hobby band wants to buy a Landrover Series 2 petrol short (is it a 90?). He does not care about LHD or RHD. So I thought TM could be very helpful because I learned that not only a few Mog enthusiasts also drive or had owned an older Landrover. It would be great if I could get some recommendation which dealer could be a serious source of this breed, also I would appreciate to learn about typical issues to have a good look at when inspecting a Series 2. For me it always will be the "Daktari" car of my TV childhood...with Paula and Clarence.

There is a lot to look out for - please take someone knowledgeable with you to look at any prospective purchase.
One point - if it is not leaking oil, there is not any left!

It's an 88 and is not at all nice to drive on the road!

it will be a fun car placed at his weekend house in the area of Nurburgring. Only being used for trips around the local area in his free time. So the comfort of drive may not have the highest priority, more so the adventure factor.

I love driving mine on the road. What makes you say it isn't nice?

Our Series III, once fully sorted, was very nice to drive on the road - as long as you wern't in a hurry or towing 2.5T in which case ear defenders were a necessity. One I wish I had kept - BAY882T where are you now.

OK, it leaked, rattled and bounced. But then we like that here.

Series Landies are great fun, I loved our IIa, but to be honest I can't see any circumstances in which I would choose one in preference to a coil-sprung model.

SatNag would rather go in my 1966 leafer than go in my Mog!

Sorry guys I tend to think of a vehicle as a machine that is pleasant to drive in the majority of conditions.

I got the loan of a 8 year old VW van recently drove 200 miles picked up items and spent a few hours there. I then drove home 200 miles and it was a nice drive.

No problem at all.

Any other cars I have driven in the last 30 years would be the same but not able to carry as much.

I have drive a good number of the Pre 90 Landrovers and after 20 miles I want out. Noise is not acceptable, comfort sorry not even trying, cold and damp when it rains.

In saying that I know many who think they are better than that.

If that is your opinion great, sorry as offroad hacks yes, buying one for every day roads use not for me.

Heinz, they are good fun vehicles but usually only for shorter trips but after saying that I have driven a Series 1 to East Germany many years ago.

Things to be aware of on any old Land Rover, the main things being the chassis and bulkhead which are steel and do rot if not looked after which unfortunately is typical of most old Land Rovers. Chassis repair parts are available and repair sections for bulkheads too also new chassis and bulkheads are available but quite expensive. The engines are usually very good and spares fairly cheap also the gearboxes in the Series 2A better and stronger. The back axle diff can be a weak point if the car has been heavily loaded regularly and towed heavy loads. Door frames and door tops also rot but replacements are fairly cheap. All other parts also readily available and usually cheap from many sources in the UK.

Try Dunsfold Land Rovers in Surrey, they usually have an old Series 2 or 2A for sale. Ebay usually has a few too.

Cheap and good fun but noisy, uncomfortable and not that economical to run. Not suited to Motorways at all. I only use my Series 1 these days for local outings and to take to some agricultural shows.
