Yesterday should have been a fun day but it finished in tears. Our petrol head dachsund, Erba, is no longer with us.

We were on the way to Geneva in the train when a phone call came from the lady who was looking after Erba to say she was in a lot of pain and nearly in a coma. She was 17 years old and had not been eating much for the last few days. Unfortunately it had arrived at the point where a decision had to be made.

Erba was a dog who loved to go in cars, the destination was unimportant, to travel was the thing.

With me alone in the Morgan she was happy in the foot well but when Alis was in the car she insisted on riding in Alis's lap and watching the road.

When she saw the bags being packed she knew we would go away without her.

Alis would have liked to be with her at the end, but it was not to be.

Peter

Always hard Peter.
Still miss my collie-X and he's been gone for over 10 years.

I'm very sad to hear of your loss, Peter. Erba was a beautiful dog and obviously greatly loved. My deepest sympathies to both you and Alis.

Sadly I think you will be both feeling the loss for a long time, you have my sympathies. I still miss my golden retriever after many years.

Really sorry to hear of the loss of Erba there just never is a right time, she will have had a wonderful life with you both and maybe was sparing you a little from those last moments.

Really sorry to hear your news.
We have a Jack Russell called Alfie he is just the same, as soon as he sees me going for the keys for the Morgan he goes mad to get in the car.
!7 years is a good life for a dog but it's incredible how close you get to them and know how I would feel if it was Alfie that had gone.

Peter and Alis, what terrible sad news. If a lifespan is reached or not, the lost is always a time of great sorrow. You have my and Diana´s empathy.

Sorry to see about your loss Peter. 17 years is a very good age. We have 2 of our 6 cats at 17, one of whom I have to inject daily with insulin for diabetes. We had a hiccup with him recently & thought time was running out but recovered as we thought17 was a good age. To my surprise our vet told us they have 50 cats aged between 20 & 25 years as life expectancy is increasing for pets li,e humans due to better diets & medical advances.

However, we get so attached to our pets and no time is good to lose them. So much nicer than many humans.
