We are planning to take SWOTMOG (2014 Plus 4 GDI) over to Brittany for a couple of weeks in a rented cottage (with a garage).

The luggage is sorted (Morgan leather suitcase and Hills Alive bags inside), but my mind is now turning towards the toolbag....

What tools, spanners, spares etc do talkmoggers consider essential / nice to have / or gratuitous fettling items? Similarly, what storage bags/tool rolls would be best?

As you have a very modern MOG ( sensible chap ) other than a good recovery insurance I would leave as much space as possible for the repatriation of as many bottles of wine that you can fit in!!

I posted a similar request. Here is the check list I ended up with:

Hi all
Just to piggyback on Steve's question, we too are planning a trip to France this year. We are heading, at a leisurely pace, to Provence and back, some 1800 miles over some fabulous roads and I have been wondering what should be taken for any breakdown.

I had thought that we should take string, chewing gum, a coil of wire and a spare relay (with diode) - anything else?

Some helpful suggestions there.

Also wise to be aware of the Morgan first rule of failure to proceed. Rule one states that you will never need any spare part you have actually packed in the car, you will only ever need those parts you removed and left on the bench on the basis that you have carried them all over the place for years and never needed them. I am convinced the car 'knows' and is showing us who is in charge.

Being serious, a good supply of fuses and a spare relay, a roll of self amalgamating hose repair tape, a spare exhaust mount cotton reel, large stock of cable ties and a small selection of spare nuts and bolts, small enough to put in a small bag and slip under the passengers seat.

Sage advice! I'm probably over thinking it.... I say that, having just spent an hour changing the headlights to the Osram Nightbreaker ultimates. What a difference!

A small selection of spanners, screw drivers and a very small socket set.

Took our 2014 GDI to France last year and in 2500 miles we had no problems at all, as you would expect for a new car. Other than the standard stuff you would take in any car going to France I have two recommendations.
1. The windscreen wipers work great in the rain but are useless at clearing flies/road muck off. Take a wet sponge or cloth in a plastic bag so when you are a couple of hundred miles from the cottage you can clean the screen sufficiently to see to get back.
2. The ground clearance under the gearbox mount is not good and will ground going over the horrific speed humps you will come across in some of the smaller villages, particularly when two up and full of luggage. Take it easy and you will be fine.
