Hi,
Due to service my car this weekend.. It's a 1996 +4 and have a couple of questions;

For a Sailsbury diff - I put in 75/90 last time, could one also use EP 80/90?

For the steering box, where do you grease / oil? An what's best to use? It's R&P.

3,000 miles ago at the last service I changed the gearbox oil, using MTF 94 as recommend for the R380 Land Rover gear box, at what point should I change this again? Every year or 20k miles?

Also do people use a tourque rench to tighten any bolts? Also are there any I should particularly focus on or replace? U bolts for instance?

Either diff oil will be great and 20,000 mile change interval is also good but I would not leave it over 5 years.

I use a torque wrench on any important bolt that you can get to it with a Torque Wrench.

Thanks, what about the steering box, what servicing is required? Is there an oil reserve to top up?

Torque settings are usually reserved for engine cylinder head, conrod, main-bearing and differential bolts and the like. Such environments are usually subject to high stress and heat that causes material expansion and can loosen bolts unless torqued correctly.

Most DIY and professional mechanics rely on intuition and experience for other fasteners unless specified in a workshop manual.

If you really do want to know what torque settings are appropriate for fasteners, a few minutes on Google will reveal the torque settings for different sizes of fasteners, thread (course and fine) as well as material.

The inexperienced tend to overtighten and strip threads, particularly bolts and screws that are threaded into aluminium.

Typically, small fasteners are tightened to a low torque, larger ones increasing to a higher torque.

The majority of fasteners you'll find on a Morgan of your vintage will be metric on the engine and gearbox, UNF on the chassis, brakes and axle. You may even find some Whitworth and BSF threaded fasteners around the body.

If you have rack and pinion steering, there is no lubrication maintenance. If you have a steering box, probably Gemmer, then look on gomog for instructions and oil specification.

If you have a limited slip diff, use the requisite spec oil such as Castol LS Hypoid (I think) or Castol Product B373. Other oil manufacturers will have their alternatives.

Apologies for asking this question again but I didn't get an answer last time.

My 5,000 mile 2015 Plus 4 GDI is having it's first annual service tomorrow. I prepaid for the service when I bought the car.

What can I reasonably expect them to do/replace/check on a first full standard annual service?

Engine oil and filter change, greasing of front suspension and propshaft.
General spanner check on front suspension I guess will be about it.

I carry out my own servicing and repairs where possible but when I bought the 4/4 Sport from new the first 10,000ml service the list above is all that appeared on the invoice for £252 5 years ago.

Stuart, in addition to Richard's list above, I would expect a full spanner check.
I asked both at the factory and at Williams where the car has its annual services.
I must say that the car always comes back from the service less rattly.

If I were you I would asking the service department what you can expect to be done.

I did ask them Wirewheel and I was told:

"oil change, full suspension check(tightened)and lubricate all suspension points".

This seems to tie in with what you both say. As far as car maintenance goes I don't know one end of a spanner from another so I was just making sure that it got what it needed (and what I had paid for).
