Reason two, they have have been tutored to give the right answer.
By way of example; the temperature gauge on my Audi (read any other VAG car) is driven by a stepper motor, whilst giving the appearance of a graduated dial face, the programming for the instument reads accurately from cold to the lower bound operating temperature, then for all temperatures in it's normal operating range the needle shows rock steady on it's mid point, only once the temperature goes above the upper bound of the normal temperature does the guage show movement again. Thus the gauge acts like emission tests, it performs in a manner we wish to see.
I would suspect that the Ford ECU is providing a similar service in order that any proud owner isn't unduly distressed by the sight of a fluctuating needle.
that's not how the ARP4 temp gauge works .. it does change according to driving conditions as noted above

I should have said that, Peters comment got me all wound up.
On a slightly different but associated tack, as we all know, there are two water temperature displays, a guage and one on the speedo LED readout. Has anyone investigated whether it would be possible to wire one of these to an oil temperature sender, which could be tapped into the sump plug? Probably the guage would be easiset as it could be rewired quite easily I would have thought.

Yes, now you mention it Peter, there is, and I'm getting a bit fed up with [of?] it. You and me and about 5m others, I suspect. I rather liked a "Health and Safety" sign in an analytical laboratory in an India pharmaceutical company. It referred to a muffle furnace and said simply" WARNING:

Engine light went out when it was plugged in to diagnostics laptop.
no fault code stored.
engine light has stayed out even after quite a few starts and the 30 mile journey home.
fingers crossed!
Thanks to Brett at Brands Hatch Morgan. Going back for 1st service in 6 weeks or so, before my "grand tour" of Ireland (which will take it well past 1000 miles). Am now on 350 miles.
meanwhile, idling is now sometimes uneven or too low.

My handbrake is very poor, hardly any grip at all, is this just mine, or are they all like that? I don't know because the standard models have drum rear brakes and a reasonably effective handbrake. The ARP4 uses disks at the rear and I do know that diskbrakes on cars are not used without a vacuum booster system. I would suspect it is much more difficult to get a good grip with a handbrake system on a disk than with a drum.
