We are thinking of revamping our cars.
The Roadster stays & we get rid of the Merc estate & Polo to get a Golf sized hybrid.
Any suggestions / recommendations?

Any suggestions / recommendations? try the i3 Range Extender. As a drive it is great, actually fun... As a car I couldn't live with the way it looks. Or the Golf GTE Hybrid thing...worthy, but looks like a car. Quite well reviewed. The ONLY thing wrong with the i8 is the price and that is is a 2 seater.

I have been very pleased with our Toyota auris hybrid. Bought in 2012 at one year old, I have now done over 50 k miles in it and returns 50 mpg, bit noisy when pushed but will cruise all day at 75/80 mph.
The newer version will do 50mph on hybrid power alone and returns nearly 70mpg allegedly. I've been looking to part ex but swmbo says as the present one works so well why bother? Can't really argue with that?

Me neither at the moment. We were given the Auris as a hire car recently, and I thought lovely, this will be cheap. In fact it was about as economical as a diesel C5 we had before (yes I know its dirtier), and when the engine came to life on the hills/motorways, it revved its nuts off, and clearly wasn't comfortable as an all rounder. Ok just for towns probably.

My 1.6 TDCI returns 56mpg over 62,000mls I know it's not as clean as a battery job but with £20 road fund licence I see no reason to pay a premium for the outlay of a battery car.

In the context of car running costs, road tax is trivial. Depreciation wins ! Not if you buy cars which have stopped depreciating, or write off the entire purchase price immediately. Never own a car which owes you money...

I would get one at the right price.
New are too ££££ and annual mileage is not high enough to give a net saving...even diesel is in that category.
I am considering a cheap runabout ( not banger material but cheap!).
A secondhand hybrid/electric would be ok but purchase price is the decider.
Depreciation is the big main decider for me as it is the baseline killer. Day to day costs for low mileage are of lesser importance ( high VED duty /silly insurance are secondary considerations but I wouldn't want a big engined gas guzzler in high ins group.
