But isn't it the case now that there are slots at the front of the cover a hole at the bottom and it is spaced out from the crankcase? Isn't this going to let in debris? Are there filters of some sort used for these openings?

If your getting oil under the timing belt cover it will be an oil seal problem I have had two M3W both 2012 models one was ok the other leaked from the seal

The confederate cover is awesome. The back part screws to the engine, then you sandwich the clear part between the back nod front parts. Really simple to fit. I used the spacers that the old cover used and it's been fine. If you wanna drill some tiny holes in it then that would be easy but I wouldn't bother!
