On most dry sump oil systems the engine has to run when checking level.

This is how to do it. Run engine for a short while to clear all oil from the sump, lift nearside bonnet against the bulkhead is aluminium oil storage tank unscrew top look inside at the bottom are two baffles with engine still running level should be to the top baffle and no higher, [ take note ]I am told by factory to only use oil grade as specified on tank top.

Thank you. Very helpful.

That is the oil checking procedure I also have, but there are a few points which need clarification.

Please be aware that if the oil tank top is unscrewed whilst the engine is running there is a very good chance oil will splash out onto the wing or certainly around the top of the tank, so switching off and checking within 30 - 60 seconds will keep things cleaner.

My tank has been overfilled by the factory and is at least 5cms or more above the top baffled plate, which cannot do its' job, as the idea is that oil and air come out of the top return pipe, the oil then drains back into the tank through the baffle plate, leaving the air to vent to the small ali. tank. At high revs. which I have not used yet, it will probably vent oil as well, until a natural level is found. When I get a chance I will be removing some oil to correct this.

My tank does not have anything about what grade of oil to use printed on it or on any stickers, but the recomendation from Cosworth was to use Comma Motorsport fully synthetic oil, and from memory the grade is 5-40, but I will have to check that. It seems that Halfords buy the same oil and rebrand it and sell it as Halfords Motorsport fully synthetic 10-40, sometimes doing a special price on it. This might have changed recently though, so please run a check on it.

The other thing to bear in mind, is that these engines are designed to use oil, so frequent checks should be made, at least once a week or every 500 miles or less. There have been instances of the oil running dry, the engine being damaged and Cosworth saying that it is down to the owner neglecting to do these checks. Please be aware and be warned. This is a highly tuned engine which needs a certain amount of TLC. Do not neglect this simple check.
