Having seen the hand brake mechanism during build yesterday at the factory it really is a very basic system.

I would have hoped that his needs simple adjustment having bedded in?

It will no doubt improve as the pads bed in. The disadvantage of rear discs on a light car is that they don't do much so will take a while to bed in. Handbrakes on rear discs are known for being weak which is why some manufacturers incorporate a small drum in the disc for a handbrake. Apparently the VW electric handbrake has a motor in each rear caliper which applies the handbrake, rather than a tunnel mounted solenoid with cables. More to go wrong......

There are a few cars with rear disks and hand brake issues - Vauxhall Corsa and Honda Jazz are in this category.

The issue I observed was this:
- The handbrake was applied when the brakes were hot.
- As things cooled down, the ratchet on the handle was sprung off leaving no parking brake applied.
- The driver had (very foolishly) left the car on a slope and in neutral.

Please don't ask me how I know this .............

Honest John has more: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer...or-the-repairs-

Please leave the car in gear when parked - we should all do this anyway.

Always leave a car in gear as a back-up. Years ago I learned this lesson when a cable broke and the car rolled off my drive....luckily it is a quiet road!
I park in the garage without brake or in gear.

The Aero based cars have rear discs and a second, mechanical pair of calipers on each disk, just for the hand brake. A bit overkill, but very effective, they lock the wheels!

But I rarely apply the hand brake, given that putting an automatic transmission in "P" is a rather more effective brake....

Peter Chapman has one for his flat rad, on which the hand brake is, well, not a lot of use....!

this is not recommended by the likes of Mercedes, as the bit in the transmission that holds the car in place is not designed to act like a handbrake and not designed to handle the forces associated with it.

One wonders how it gets through the MOT? The 16% efficiency requirement is equivalent to holding the car on a hill just under 1:6, which is reasonably steep.
