Maybe another quality comment: I think that on the 2009 trads the rheostat does not control the illumination by directly varying the current to the illumination. Rather the "rheostat" seems to input its value into the CAN-bus of the vehicle, and the ECU then varies the voltage or current supplied to the illumination accordingly. Why do I think this? The rheostat turns very smoothly, but the illumination clearly goes in about 5 or 6 steps from relatively bright to dark. BTW: does anyone know if there are still bulbs in the instruments, or do they have LED illumination? Andy.

Andy,
My 2000 4/4 has bulbs- but VERY small ones. I'm not sure what the current position- eg on the 4/4 Sport- is.

4/4 Sport has traditional dials with bulbs, not modern backlit dials, warning lamps don't dim with rheostat and Hi-beam warning lamp is too bright

Easter, If the blue hi-beam light is too bright, replace the bulb with a 24v one. You'll still see it but it will be roughly half as bright!

Been sticking my finger over it, tricky when you need both hands on the wheel but I was thinking of making a neoprene shield

My '98 +4 instrument lights vary from nil to bright in roughly the top 1/8th of the 'rheostat' travel.
Can't see the indicator repeaters in bright sunlight (Colin, previous owner, did fit an audible indicator though), so I'm toying with replacing them with LEDs. Just changed the instrument lights on the 90 with LEDs - much better (mind you, half of the bulbs had expired!).
Cheers,

Cheers, While hunting under the steering wheel column, just now, I found my Rheostat Knob on the RHS near the door. (only took 10 months to notice)so will have a play with that if we ever go out in the Dark (whooooooo) There is another very tiny narrow protrusion/button/twiddler under the dash roughly under the speedo? Not sure if it is for turning or pushing so have left well alone at the moment. The speedo does not have a trip line so I imagine it cant be for re setting that? Any Ideas what its for? Makes me sound stupid, but I cant find any reference to it. I don't think we have an Ejector Seat!

Frank, itīs for pushing and switches between total mileage and trip counter. Hold it depressed and the trip counter is zeroed. (I admit I had to ask a factory driver whether or not the car had a trip counter myself)! Andy

Hi everyone, I moved my rheostat onto the wooden section of the dash-fiddly but looks fine and much easier to see plus there is no chance of catching ones knee on it. Meabh. By the way Dave, it seems that 2000rpm is 60mph on mine but I've no idea whether this is normal.
