Tata Steel's current headline statement! A certain irony.
I think that that is a bit unreasonable towards Tata. Our energy costs are the highest in Europe because of carbon taxes that ars used to subsidize renewables who import foreign materials. How rediculous to break our economy on the back of this global warming crap when our whole emmisions account for less than 2% of global emmisions. Lets get real.
our whole emmisions account for less than 2% of global emmisions.
As we have less than 1% of the world's population, it could be argued that we're producing at least twice as much emissions as we should be.
Take into account that our economy is very technologically advanced, and that we are a very rich nation, it seems reasonable that we should be able to leverage our ability to be more efficient than the average and produce a good deal less than 1% of global emissions.

However, how long should Tata bear a £1m a day loss? They're not a charity - they are entitled to a profit.
As others have said, EU rules are making it a very uneven playing surface - this combined with substantial environmental taxation conspires to make the business unsustainable.
When the same thing happened in France the steel works closed. If the French Unions couldn't force the French Government to act there is zero chance of Cameron's lot doing anything.
Sorry Peter but thats just not correct. There still is a major steel industry in France. As there is in Germany and in Italy. Even in Holland. Port Talbot is the last bulk steelmaking plant in Britain. If that shuts there is nothing much left bar a few small arc plants.

An alternative view might be to blame China for dumping steel onto world markets at unsustainable levels, undercutting even the most efficient western steel producers.

I find that quite interesting. The steel industries of France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands are all operating in the same economic environment as the UK. Are they also making losses at the scale of the UK plants? If so, who is bailing them out? And if not, why not?
