So it is done and all the dreadful sounding crashes and scraping sounds have disappeared. Fung how I had become used to the gradual deterioration of the gear change mechanism. I am now starting to enjoy changing down into second gear again. I use the engine more than the brakes - it is more fun and I have better control on mountain roads. I can understand why people have replaced a gearbox only to discover that the problem lay with these silly bushes. My +8 has only done around 33k miles but the heat in the south of France and 26 years of elapsed time is no doubt to blame. Thank you all so much for your help and support.

Michael

Sospan,

In response to your question about the cup - it was perfect. I cleaned it and then lightly greased it before reassembly. Attached is a photo of the cup.

The cup shows no sign of cracking - maybe it is because it was fairly clean and the car has rarely seen mud and rain. I did find some mysterious walnut shells in the transmission tunnel - a squirrel or rodent maybe?

Here is my collection of damaged rubber/neoprene bushes. How could they have become so damaged? Age and heat maybe - a warning to us all.

Another attempt to upload the photo of the bushes - they continue to cause me grief.

Why I kept them?? I don't really know.

Is this a side effect of Morgan ownership???

Cheers,

Lucky man!
You can see the tab...as it flexes it weakens and snaps. Some people weld strengthening lugs to it, but most get it welded , but they still break!
Good grease/oil under the cup ihelps reduce flexing so worth doing at annual service or sooner.
