Folks,

JI have just had a rather alarming conversation with my local dealer and am now looking for a confirmation that the Crank Pulley Kit is now seen as a chargeable 'upgrade' bundle, for which I've been quoted £245+vat +fitting (which I spspect will come out at about £400 or thereabouts). Seems to consist of various bolts, washers, pulley wheels, camcover spacer washers - and a new vented front cover as well.

Quite how having a standard setup that risks seeing the crank pulley bolt punch its way out through the front cover, Alien chest-burster style, is considered acceptable with the fix being considered a customer funded upgrade, is once again beyond me. But hey, I shouldn't be surprised I guess...

May I ask what others have done with respect to the Crank Pulley Kit, how much you paid and what the kit included please?

Thanks.

Most of the cost has to be the new cover.

But why the new cover is you're using the spacers? Seems redundant to me.

In view of the many instances of timing belt failure at relatively low mileages, I have been looking into the possibility of converting the timing side of the engine to spur gears, thus eliminating the timing belt completely and ridding myself of the reliability problem caused by the premature breaking of the cam belt.

(This is quite apart from the fact that if the cam belt breaks when doing about 80mph in the fast lane of a motorway it could be quite injurous to one's health.
)
As part of my research into doing this modification, I have purchased from Matts Machine Shop a camshaft support plate and also a cam wheel and the crankshaft pulley complete with it's fitting kit. I assume this is the latest version as it comes with an instruction leaflet published by S&S entitled "Installation Instructions: S&S Timing Pulley Repair Kit for S&S X-Wedge Engines S&S PN 370-0015).
This kit cost £72.95 and the camshaft support plate was £149.00 but I needed these items in order to determine the relative angular positions of the keying features (2 flats) in the bore of the crankshaft pulley to the Front TDC position mark of the original pulley and also the position of the locating dowel hole in the camshaft pulley (used for locking the camshaft when fitting a new timing belt) and the keyway in the camshaft that locates it in the correct position on the camshaft.

I have attached a photo of the new kit which consists of a hardened steel washer (to be fitted on the crankshaft before the crankshaft pulley), the pulley itself, a further shaped steel washer and finaly a long retaining bolt.

I don't know how this compares with the original set up on the early engines that gave the problems because although my car is Dec '12 and believe it or not, I had to have a replacement engine in May '13 (at 1700 miles), I have not stipped my existing set up down to see how it differs from what is shown below.

The instructions state that the bore of the crankshaft pulley and also the retaining bolt have "loctite 243 blue" applied to them before assembly.

I hope this goes some way to ansering your question.

Regards
Keith

Have had mine changed under warranty. since the bolt worked itself out through the front cover.

There was no really dangerous situation as the cam-belt stopped turning. Just like swithcing off the engine while driving. Suddenly no more power. Pushed the clutch-pedal and while still having some speed on the M3W, found a suitable place to park. No problem :-)

Now waiting for it to finish, probably next week.

That kit looks simple and, one has to say, obvious! It could have saved me and others considerable hassle.

Hmmmmm...when (if at all) was the kit made standard? Wonder if my 2016 M3W already has it.

I think it was concluded in this thread that both spacers and vented covers are fitted to current models, and presumably required to allow adequate airflow in and out of cover.

All 2016 cars should have this upgrade fitted as Krazyhorse are not fitting them to new cars.

Thanks for the replies folks - seems that most of you have had the kits fitted f.o.c, which is nice. The dealer are chasing MMC to see if I can keep my plain front cover (I have the spacer washers fitted already and it's not beyond the wit on man to put a couple of venting slots in my existing cover is it?) and therefore reduce the cost somewhat. Let's see what they say. I had a precautionary new cambelt this time last year, so that should still be OK....
