For my island hopping trip around the Outer Hebrides I used an Overboard bag (which I love) and a Boot Bag from http://www.boot-bag.com. I would recommend both.

We use an old leather suitcase that I found on E-Bay - for period effect and style. We have a 90's 4-seater with a standard stainless steel rack on the back that holds the case like it is on a shelf. I have lowered the rack about 85mm by getting replacement rear stays made (Heart of England)so that with the hood up I can still see over it in the rear view mirror. We drive the motorway from Bilbao to Biarritz and beyond a few times each year, so I feel a lot safer if I can see the Spanish and Portuguese lorries following me.
The case itself does get wet, but it looks right. We pack everything inside it in a big strong plastic bag and we have had no problems at all. That leaves the interior space in the car for wine and other comestibles.
A different solution, probably peculiar to our type of 4-seater rack, but it works for us.
Yes our solution too. Bought a big old British black leather suitcase with aluminium clasps for 20 euros at the second hand store down the street. Also comes with interesting stickers from previous owners. Will put our kit inside a plastic bag and stow it in the suitcase. Or just use the suitcase for side screens and waterproof car cover and put our kit behind the seats. It looks the 60's part and it costs, well, 20 euros.
Hi and welcome to TM. I have just been looking at the Highlander bags and they are advertised as water resistant and not waterproof. would have to know that her wardrobe would be dry on arrival otherwise we wouldn't go!!! I would imagine in heavy rain on the back of a MOG its going to get very wet. Try Ortleib, expensive but first class.

Yes I know it says water resistant but it seems completely waterproof to me - within reason. I suspect if they were to state waterproof then some might argue it could be taken down to depths of x metres with no adverse effect! Anyway we shall see in due course. Some of those other bags you mention look great.
I second Biffo Smith's recommendions , Overboard bags are excellent I've got several and they are completely waterproof . Boot bag seems good but not used it so much .
I purchased a Morgan Leather suitcase. Great looking but very heavy. Probably too nice to leave on rack unattended. Opted for the more modern waterproof Rimowa case, which is much lighter and can wheeled rather can carried. [img:center]http://[/img]
I have to agree about the Morgan leather case - I got one and it looks fab on the back of my car - I had some red leather straps made and painted in the embossed Morgan logo, but boy it's bloody heavy - and that's empty!
I have been looking for an aluminium case which is the same size as the Morgan suitcase so I can use the nicely logo'd cover but no luck just yet

Here's the Overboard and the Morgan mohair boot bag which comes with the Tourista case. You can just make out the end straps around the rack. I also use an elasticated spider as a reserve chute...................... The Tourista case is very heavy and a pain to manoevre, so we don't use it much but the boot bag is perfect. It takes all our walking gear including boots and sticks. Fantastic.
