Looking at the parts manual the Australian spec model has a long tortuous intake pipe (removed when photo taken) feeding air from each end to the central front facing inlet manifold. These ends route around each head then via twin flexy pipes to that Y adaptor and remote air cleaner. Hope it works after all that trouble
Seems the timing cover is specially for Aus models as well, although that looks quite neat

The restrictive air box supposed to quieter things down for our sensitive ears, but could not tell any difference ,seems to breath a bit better ,and looks much better.
