Two of my wheels came loose in Wales last year, as they loosened when cornering a grinding noise was audible but not felt. FOS was 1/4 turn loose, ROS was 1/2 turn loose. It was the grub screws that had loosened following servicing the week before. Near side was fine.

Nick, regular use and simple preventative maintenance are all important on these cars. So using the A/c in the winter and the heater in the summer just keeps the units serviceable. Use the elec Windows regularly and if in doubt grease the cables.....by NS window fell out last year on the same Wales trip, the cable had snapped due to chaffing and lack of grease.
I now build in a preventative maintence schedule on top of the service items.

Ctek battery conditioner is a fantastic idea, only £40 and works through the fag lighter so no need for Anderson clips or terminal clamps.
Air chamber is an idea, good for post wash drying off as well......I will look into that myself.....more than polish sell them and the owner Mark is a top chap.

As for the 5000 rpm advise, perhaps I am in the minority here, but that is the target for pretty much all gear changes I thought.

Running costs of the Aero have been, annual service and MOT circa £400, new battery circa £150 and new MAF and Heater control valve were around £120 each, so three years of aero < one year of aston.
The story with the new clutch at £28k is what did it for me. I had the semi automatic clutch on the Vantage, essentially a manual style friction clutch operated by very basic electronics. When in it went in for its service at 28k, was told by Aston that it would need it's second clutch. I said what do you mean a second clutch it's only done 28k of largely motorway miles. Sir we have never heard of anyone getting more than 20K out of one of these clutches you have done very well - and that will be £3500!!!
Notwithstanding Aston's still beautiful to look at and beautiful to drive but not an Aero

Sounds like you were quite unlucky, altho I have heard Aston will advise clutches before they are due, I have heard of people getting far more miles on the Sportshift than 20k!
The manuals are more reliable and preferred however.

Servicing wasn't as much at my local Aston dealer, and I believe Bamford Rose was even cheaper. Around £600/1000 pending which service. My dealer wanted £800/1600.

Still as beautiful as they are, I prefer the Aero - feels more special. smile

I have a very dry dehumidified garage, car lives under a soft fleece custom cover and I have an Optimate 6 trickle charger so thats the battery taken care of I hope. When shes out she will be driven in excess of 5000rpm once warmed up!

Are the cables accessibly easily? I don't want to dismantle too much of the fragile trim.

Regards,
Nick

thanks for all the responses on the issue of tightening the nut!
The nut has never been swapped around and clearly has LHRear marked on it. Its the same wheel that failed a year ago and had a new hub fitted due to the damage it incurred (4 month delivery from Morgan!!!). I did witness them putting the wheel on when I had a new tyre and line up the grub screw with the slot. I checked the depth the grub screw went in and its the same as the rest.As someone else mentioned, its a pit there wasnt a way a hole could be drilled through the whole assembly and a split pin or similar be inserted -much more positive way of ensuring all is well!
Off to the workshop tomorrow with the car - numerous stops on the way to make sure the wheel is still tightly secured!!!

Two S1's and many miles I've never had a wheel issue (touch wood)

Thread lock on the grub screw

What sort of bar do you guys use? I'm assuming not the one that comes with the car?

Not sure where you got your Aston service costs from. I took the DBS in last week for a 3 yr servive and it was £1080 which inc the brake fluid

reading the post from Taffy has jogged my memory for something I meant to acquire a while back.It is a bespoke wheel nut tool that fits the OZ wheel perfectly and has a 38mm socket on the end so you can use a socket and long breaker bar and/or torque wrench.

(Apologies to the originator of this information , I got it from TM but can't remember the source... blush )

Talked to Lionel Roberts, sent him the original wheel tool and...magic: a perfect tool with 38mm socket on which I use an extending ratchet/breaker bar. His prices are very reasonable ; not sure what his final price for these will be but expect around same as spinners. He is able to machine to fit 2/3-eared spinners/octagonals as well and up for a challenge on anything else -

I have spoken to Lionel today and he is out of stock of the adaptor but is going to make one up for me in 3 to 4 weeks time.I said I would mention details on here and if anyone else is interested he can make a batch up at the same time.

Correct me if I am wrong (most likely laugh2 ) but my Aero has a tool in the boot which fits over the wheel nut, I presume this fits a socket - or is it just for use with the bar in the boot?

If the latter, how much are these tools? I would be interested at the right price..

Nick

Nick,
if it is the original Morgan tool then no, a socket won't fit it.It is a hollow tube with two holes aligned which the breaker bar goes through.

Whilst not entirely necessary, the 'Lionel tool' smile is (to my mind) ,a much more elegant solution which allows for the use of a range of socket/breaker bars/torque wrench/etc.

I think they will be circa £60 approx. ,delivered which ,considering they are bespoke and machined from aircraft grade alloy is not too bad a price.

I'm guessing that if Lionel gets a few orders the price may come down a little - best bet is to give him a call...

I should probably state that I have no connection to Lionel - just spotted this from a while back and decided to purchase one innocent

Thanks James,

If a group buy comes along I might be interested, but I think I might leave it for now, car is so low its a pain to work on myself anywho - so not much need to take the wheels off for buftying! smile

The bar they supplied bends before you even get it out of the boot
