I have had my 88 4/4(cvh) for a couple of weeks and so am still learning! but I was stuck in crawling traffic this evening, I noted that the temp gauge moved away from its just over 90 to the next mark (120?) and sat there, the fan seemed to kick in but didnt get the temp down. It took all of the remaining 6 mile drive on open roads for the temp to get back to the normal spot - do CVH's just run a bit hot or do I have a cooling problem?
cheers for tips

Generally, the Ford 4 cylinders do run a little bit hot in the 4/4 because of the long 'run' between the rad and the block, but well worth keeping an eye on it and considering the obvious probs: do you have a airlock, are you losing coolant. is the cooling fan cutting in soon enough?
Other factors which can affect the temp are apparently silly things such as do you have a badge bar or a number plate mounting which is obstructing air flow
If you have only recently acquired the car, have you flushed the rad and system

Our 2007 ran hot until I realised that the fan was not cutting in. I had never heard it running during Hot Weather or Traffic. Fuse or Connection problem sorted under warranty. Now Fan works all is well.

Hi, I have a 87 4/4 and had exactly the same problem with my car and in many ways i still do..
Try a fan override switch but like you it does not bring the heat down much.
Also have new radiator in the car with a thicker core for extra colling.. is better as car runs at 80 to 90 normal so more to move to heat up.
Also tried a new temp sensor, which can also help if it is faulty..
So all in all I have tried everything but the water pump.. in the end i feel it is a general problem with the car.
I would be delighted to find a solution to prove me wrong. Will

A week ago was in traffic jam near Antwerp and temp. was rising over 90°, opened heater and temp. dropped by 5°to 7°... maybe this will help a bit... (recently, previous owner installed new pump and radiator)

I'll check a few things out today, sounds like I may have a little issue. I havent seen any coolant leaking, but i remember the rad water looked a little rusty when I had a peek the other week

When topping up the radiator try squeezing the top radiator hose a few times. This usually liberates air trapped there allowing more water in the system. Worked for me on a crossflow 4/4 and now +8.

My former 4/4 4-seater (1991) suffered from overheating when climbing mountain passes in summer; switching the heater on maximum (as Herman mentioned) does affect the coolant temperature substantially; also can the change from ordinary tap water to proper coolant liquid bring some relief. By the way, the CVH-engined Morgans are known for activating the coolant fan for a few minutes after switching off the engine. D'herde Bart

Also add some "Water Wetter" reduces viscosity of the coolant water to break down bubbles which sap cooing effect.
Surprising how effective this is and it's a much cheaper initial answer

I think my stat has gone down, just came back from the school run, temp just over 90 on the open road back, left the car on the drive idling, but no sign of the fan running, turned off with temp at next increment (120?) and the fan cuts in for 5 minutes, I guess that the fan cutting in at turn off is not govened by stat
