Hello all,

To change the wheel bearings I had to take the wire wheels on the front of my old 4/4 off today. As always after a longer period of driving the nuts were tighter than tight and to losen them took a lot of hammering on the crude and impractical spanner. I hate to do this because there is always the risk to hit the rim or the spokes(and the heavy lead hammer is ruined afterwards too, as are the octagons on the nut).

I wonder if there is a better method or a better device to get wire wheel nuts without ears off. Any hints/tips?

PS I've just acquired two of the MWS tools and, having tried them out ( using a Thorex nylon- headed hammer) found them excellent- no slipping, no marking of the wheels.

Yes, that MWS tool (and a nylon hammer) does the job for me. At the price, why on earth does the factory not supply it as standard?

I agree. The tool from MWS was about sixteen quid plus the vat (I ordered by 'phone and it got to me the next day.) I bought a new Thorex so that I could have one in the car and one in the garage and it was fifteen quid. A great deal and some excellent kit

Many thanks to one and all who bothered to answer despite there was an earlier thread (which I didn't find). The information was very useful..

As an addition: My "manual" for Borrani wire wheels suggests a torque of 270 NM.

By the way: After the struggle with the front wheels yesterday I fabricated my own breaking bar by drilling 2 holes in the spanner and bolting a sturdy 5 ft. square bar to it. Opening the rear wheel nuts with this was like cutting butter.

A 5 foot breaker bar sounds ideal.

But how to store it under the parcel shelf?

I use a rubber hammer on winged spinners. The hammer has shot inside which gives it a double hit when used and the rubber will not damage the rims or the spokes if acidentally hit. I now have a +4 with the wider outer wheel rim and it it still easy to use. No more holding a spanner and hitting your wrist.

Tonight I took a couple of photos of the Ledgerwood wheel nut tool. I'm very pleased with how this performs 'in the workshop' , although it's not really practical for carrying in the Mog.

Dave, as you know, I bought one and, in the garage it is an excellent piece of kit- not least quality wise- but for on the road use, I've gone over to Nigel P's suggestion of an MWS spanner plus a Thor nylon- face hammer. Does the busness and easy to store/carry
