Hello all,

I noticed the throttle cable outer jacket had worn through where it rubbed against the steering column. I obtained a replacement from my local dealer (Morgan Spares) and before installing it I decided to reinforce the area where it rubbed with a thick layer of electrical tape covered by heat-shrink tubing.

When reinstalling I looked at it and concluded it would lay better if I routed the cable under the steering column (rather than over it, as it had been) - would fit naturally and not rub nearly as much. That much was true, but whenever I depressed the accelerator pedal, even after increasing tension on the cable, the cable's outer jacket would slip out of position (on the carb side), causing a problem when you let up the pedal - the cable jacket ferrule (now out of it's nesting receptacle) no longer lines up with the receptacle and the cable doesn't return to idle when you release the throttle. No amount of tension on the cable prevented this slippage from occuring.

I re-installed it like it had been, with the cable coming to the right of the steering column - clearly pushing on the steering column at the exact spot the prior cable wore through. This cants the cable just enough so that it firmly nests into it's receptacle and no longer slips out when I move the accelerator pedal. Back to normal.

Is this how other RHD TR4 series plus 4 throttle cables are installed? I know a picture is worth a thousand words but I don't have them on a web server yet, so I cannot post them. sorry about that.

Do you have a modified steering column. I thought a 1966 +4 has a tube that would enclose to column.

The steering column is enclosed. The cable presses against it on the top. I believe road vibration over many years led to the jacket wearing through.

I have LHD. So different dynamics. But still a problem. I carry a spare cable. Strangely I have lent my spare to others for emergency repairs. But never had to use it myself. Seems like carrying a spare is insurance that stuff will not happen.

I still have the spare cables from my T140V & MG Le Mans. Never needed either.

I think I must have read something you posted, or someone else saying this, so I have a spare cable all ready to go.

On my RHD tr3 plus 4(with a Morgan spares cable) the cable goes well under the steering column if I remember correctly. I will try to snap a picture tomorrow

I once rigged the choke as the throttle after breaking a cable. It made for some interesting driving but got me home.
