Today I cracked my screen. Is this a dealer repair? Any idea how long it takes? Any options to consider when getting it replaced.

PS. My plus 8 windscreen is 11 stud.

My 4/4 screen with the tradtional stud hood cracked earlier in the year. Through my insurer, Gott & Wynne it was covered apart from the £75 excess which was a relief as it with the electric screen it's a bout £1000 to replace. Check your insurance company and see if you're covered.

If you want a heated screen then it is, in the UK, available only from MMC....it comes mounted in the frame.
You can get a flat, laminated glass screen for not much, but here without the heating the MOT may be failed as I believe that the MOT requires windscreen demisters should also work which means would need to be tested as it is the only way of demisting, but how it would be tested I've no idea!!

Fitting time isn't that long, no more than 2 hours, probably less.

But the screen is eyewateringly expensive. Arround £1000..... plus VAT.

I find it a little surprising that no clever chap has come up with an electric blower demister system to replace the £1000 pound windscreen with a £100 plain glass one. Is there really not enough room on the scuttle to fit demist slots?

Techniques did mine last year - from memory it was in the region of £850.

Pleased to clarify that windscreen demisters are not part of the Uk MOT and are therefore not checked on the MOT test.

They are also not £1,000 or anywhere near that, my last one was fitted, complete with new frame, at Allon Whites just over a year ago. Genuine MMC item is £704 including labour and VAT for a 2008 car with a heated screen, if you have been charged £1,000 plus VAT (£1,400) you have been ripped off by £700 so may want to consider changing your dealership. I just checked the invoice so am not guessing the price chaps. This is for a Trad +4 of course.

When I asked Williams I was told about £1000, perhaps that included fitting and VAT, but they usually quote excluding!

But of course the +8 screen is wider and slightly taller....

ok, so a call to Zurich Insurance on Monday.

Thanks for the replies.

Truth is I don't know how it happened. I was driving the car today to Dusseldorf, pulled back the sun-visor to reveal a small 1" crack at the top of the screen. Heart sank. Yesterday evening I went over a large pot-hole. I did check the wheels and there was no damage whatsoever - so I imagine this was when the screen was overstressed.

Either way, £700, £1000, that's excessive, but its not persuaded me to convert back to hardcore Speedster mode. Screen will stay.

Does the screen need to be heated? I had plain glass in my Caterham when I was racing it.

Thanks,

J. Neil
