Guys
Follow up on my post reference Quaife communications. Myself and Greg Dixon-Smith (supply chain director) have followed up through our contacts at Quaife and can report that they have several bevel boxes that have become noisy and are carrying out inspection and investigation work.
Between the two companies were looking at various combinations including how heat affects the bearings and gears, if the aluminium casing is expanding due to heat is there float internally. It would be silly of me to go into further detail, but i would like to reassure you all, that we're working closely with Quaife to find a solution. I'll update further once i have concrete info.

Good to hear that Morgan and Quaife are looking into the problem of noisy bevel gearboxes, shame it has taken over 3 years of complaints and box changes to get some action. If you want another noisy when hot bevel box to inspect, I have one.

Thanks for the update and good to read that both companies taking our complains serious.
Your statement that it can be caused by the heat could be correct but why have 40% of the owners (who took part in the bevel box survey) a noiseless one ? They also get hot and are still silent.
The main culprit could be (or need to be) a difference in tolerances during manufacturing.
A good advice could be to contact Garage 56 who also try to find a solution to this nasty problem. Perhaps they know the answer you're looking for.
We hope you find a solution soon and we all can enjoy our M3W's even more as we do now,

Hi mark
My first bevel box was a screamer, especially when hot. I had it changed after 13000km. Unfortunately new one also a screamer albeit at different rpm points etc.
I have now got it at a specialist differential workshop to see what can be done also to repair front oil seal which started leaking. New box has done 2000km.
I will report back on comments, fixes if any and final outcome.

I just finished installing a NASA vent (best place was about 12inches before the B box. I made a whole new sheet for the modification). Still too early to see if it makes a difference, but I'll keep checking in. My BB is noisy between 45 and 60mph, but not too. Generally I can imagine just the whine on the gear reduction box for the propeller. PS I'd send pictures but not able as yet to conquer the picture mountain

Not that it will improve the cooling air flow, but it's a NACA duct rather than a NASA one. I have a scoop fitted to direct some more air to the front of the bevel box, it may help a little but it's not the answer. The NVH kit makes getting airflow to the BB more difficult and later chassis doesn't have a central panel to fit a duct to.

I've just had Millers EP 140 put in the bevel box and on the 20 mile drive home it's a great improvement.
The screaming at 55-65mph is now more of a humming and certainly livable with.
It needs more miles and a hotter day to confirm the benefit but so far so good.

Chris, what were you running before the Miller EP-140? The standard MMC oil as they changed the box about 2,000 miles ago.
