The SS engine out put was 200 but the Omex map only gave 185 . New ecu and remap made 205 bhp.

Roger, one way or another I have had contact with a few Plus 4 SS owners and it seems that the issue did not apply to all cars. It seems that whatever caused the problem was right on the borderline of causing a fuel smell or not however it is almost certain that none of the production cars would pass an MOT emissions test before the calibration (more than just the fuel map) was updated.

The lambda sensor is absolutely critical to the correct funtioning of the fueling system on modern cars and the ECU adjusts the mixture within preset parameters to give the best power and to control emissions. If the ECU is not calibrated to the entire system of intake, cams, and exhaust system, the preset parameters of the calibration may be outside the range that can be adequately controlled by the ECU. Any changes to any of these elements such as the alteration of the cams, the addition of a sports exhaust, or even a different airfilter may throw the requirements of the fuel/air mixture outside of that which the ECU can cope with thereby requiring a revision of the calibration. In simple terms it may just be the fuel map but could also include the ignition (spark timing) map and other parameters to bring the calibration within the range that the feedback from the lambda sensor can accurately control the fuel mixture.

There is quite a good explanation of the functioning of lambda sensors at http://www.lambdapower.co.uk/TechNotes/Tech-1.asp. For anyone who is interested it is well worthwhile reading up to page 11 which covers petrol engines. From 12 to 15 covers diesel engines.

The index is at http://www.lambdapower.co.uk/TechNotes/technotes_index.asp

I must have been one of the lucky ones Peter. Although I only kept it a few months and sold it on to my friend in South Africa so it never got to the MOT emissions testing issue here. In South Africa emissions are not exactly very high up on any agenda with regards to cars and they only ever do their very basic 'MOT' testing at the change of any ownership so if somebody owners a car for 20-25 years it will never be tested and even if it is sold on it's about as basic checking to make sure that a 4 wheeled car still has 4 wheels fitted.

Pretty much the same as the prototype. Has anyone done a dyno run with the revised Omex calibration?

Well, I've now driven a Supersport and have to say I'm totally smitten! A real character of a car, fun on the road and I suspect with real track potential. Love the Isis blue and pale green versions.

Not entirely impressed with the roll cage design, fire extinguisher placement or cheap heated screen connector but those are rather minor points.

Couple of questions on day to day living with these cars:

Can the vagueness at the centre of steering be solved with Suplex or similar?

Roof is 'traditional', rather than 'easy up' and pvc - how do they fair for waterproofing and wind noise at motorway cruising speeds?

Whilst I'm not looking for a daily driver I expect to do quite a few miles and like to run cars through winter. How do these cars fair when left outside in wind, rain and possibly salt?

Cheers

Vagueness around the dead ahead can be dialled out with set-up or rack adjustment.
Thanks for you e-mail the other day, I haven't forgotten about you. I'm just compiling a list of things for you to think about along with my take on certain things

I looked very seriously at getting one last year. Very taken by the 'ethos' of the car, but the reality is that for me at least, it was a bit too hairy chested for what I wanted a Morgan for. Your own personal pleasure gauge may swing the other way to mine, so a lot of your questions you already know the answer to in your heart..!!

Modern Morgans can indeed be left outside and used in bad weather, but you must accept they will take extra cherishing to keep on top of the damage nature can cause. Water & the corrosive nature of salt can wreak havoc with even minor things such as electrical connectors unless much care is given.

To leave it like this and use it on track without much else isn't perhaps the best way, but if you're prepared to invest time & effort into looking after it I'm sure it'll be fine. Or you'll die..maybe..

For me the roof looks fabulous, real trad Morgan affair, but it's a pain to put up, take down & is infamous for gaps. This was another of my own reasons to walk away, as I really enjoy having the easyup hood on mine.

The bottom line is, you have to be very careful to not let your heart rule all the time, but if you feel all of the things you mention are insignificant on the ownership scale, then just go for it.. They are wicked cars, and I still love 'em.

Steve has pretty well summed it all up.

The Trad buttoned hood can be a pain .

But on my 4/4 I quickly got used to it and with practice I got pretty good at Up and Down .

It folds really flat too so that a bonus.
