I attended Goodwood FOS on the Friday and, having waved goodbye to another Supersports, found my car refused to start. Fortunately the kind people there offered to jump the car and I borrowed a set of leads from Ken Blocks team. The car made it home, just starting for much needed fuel but was completely dead the following morning.
Since then I've changed the battery and it seems to be keeping charge. Typically she sits on trickle charge so I was surprised to have any issues. However, I've noticed two things:
1. The amp whines when the radio is on - getting louder as I accelerate. It disappears when the radio is off so it certainly isn't the gearbox (my first thought). Is this normal? The radio has been upgraded and there's a second wire to the positive battery terminal which I'm guessing is for audio bits and pieces. 2. The car has the heater button lit all the time whether on or off. Could this be due to a bad earth? The light isn't as bright as when the switch is properly on but light enough to notice.

Hello Stephen,
At Blenheim an Aero SS owner was worried if his car would start.
It did, but maybe there are a few "gremlins" still to be sorted?
Cheers

Thanks Yann, I'll have a go tomorrow. I've been meaning to get more under the skin of this thing so perhaps this is the start!

The symptoms you describe arent normal but might well not be what caused the engine to fail to start. But you dont give anything like enough information for me to be able to help. For example, when you say it wouldnt start what do you mean? Did the engine turn over but fail to catch? Or did it not turn? If it didnt turn could you hear a clicking noise from the starter motor? When you turned the key did any lights dim?
You should not have another wire jury rigged direct to the battery. There will be a terminal on the key switch for auxiliaries. If the power of whatever is currently connected to the battery is too great for that switch then the switch should operate a relay. Either way the feed should come from the fuse box.
The whining noise - is it engine speed related? If so then likely its from the alternator. Quite possibly just pick up from the way that the amp is connected.

Thanks Howard.
All dials came on as expected but hitting the start button did nothing but provide two audible clicks from the starter motor. With the jump leads attached to a Range Rover the thing fired into life straight away. The run down was traffic ridden (3 hours to do 90 miles) but uneventful - the car did seem to increase revs at one stage (I assumed the passenger had hit the air-con button but hadn't) when waiting to get into Goodwood but nothing else out of the ordinary.
You're right about the audible whining - with the radio on, the note increases with engine speed - it sounds like a WEC hybrid.
With the new battery attached it is starting after being left for a while, however I'm concerned by the dimly lit windscreen heater button and audio whining. Plus I need this to be reliable for the girlfriend's commute or I'm for it! It might be a good time to book this in for an early service.
I'll post up a picture of the battery (before change) and the wires attached tomorrow.

Again and the last, you amp/filter or anythings like that ( i don't see the device) have drain your battery because of bad installation.
For know exactly the damage is : make the car run without battery plug in (unplug after start) if the car can run only on alternator replug the battery unplug everything related to the radio , charge the battery and return to the shop install your stuff .... is no more complicated than this.
this is my free advice, witch i will charge you 300 US$ if you come to my shop and ask me to sort out your problem. You can keep turning and thinking, reading article over the web they is write here from yesterday
