Having driven on to a farmers field as directed by staff without being stopped for payment (and no charge notice anywhere to be seen), we returned after the event to find a penalty notice demanding £100! If paid within 14 days this is reduced to £60. Considering the tickets to attend on Sunday were £200 each I think this is an incredible rip off. Consider this a heads up if you intend to go next year.

How on earth can that be legal without a visible warning sign.
What a rip off if it is.

John are you sure it's a penalty notice and not a parking charge? Only the police/traffic wardens and councils can issue a penalty notice which is legally enforceable. A parking charge is like an invoice and a request for payment. If you parked in a farmers field I doubt it's a penalty notice so in which case I would ignore it. They have to prove there is economic loss caused by you taking up a space an farmers field.

I'm thinking I should ignore it and see what happens. After 40 odd years with no fines whatsoever I'd hate this to blemish my record although it was a bit naive of me to think I could park for free near a major sporting event.

SORRY UNABLE TO GET THE FULL LOT IN RED THE FIRST LINE IS NOT PART OF A LETTER IE. ATTEMPTING To
Attempting to extort money from you in an unlawful manner . [[color:#FF0000]color:#FF0000] Please find an extract of the Bill of Rights 1689, enacted and formally entered into Statute following the Declaration of Rights 1689-"that all grants and promises of fines and forfeitures of particular persons before conviction are illegal and void ". As you are will be aware , The Bill of Rights is a constitutional statute and may not be repealed impliedly .
I am not aware that the road Traffic Act 1994 or Local Government Act 2000 makes express reference to repealing the Bill of Rights Act 1689. Therefore it would appear that you or an agent [color:#FF0000]has no lawful authority to demand money for an alleged infringement that has not been dealt with by a court of law . If you wish to proceed against me, please refer the matter to a Court of Law in an orderly fashion. Otherwise, the forfeit demand of me is illegal and void. Send him a copy of the above. its the law and legal. I got my wife off one of these "charges" at Chester Services when she was 10 minutes over the two hours and her friend who had been there half an hour longer didn't get one, got a friend off one at Edisbury Square in Frodsham which is legendary for the cameras capturing people on the way in and out of people who visit the car park twice in one day so it takes the entry from the first visit and the exit from the second visit and totally ignores the first exit and second entry, and a penalty notice issued in Bridge Street Chester by CWAC which wasn't legally enforceable as the signage had not been legally approved and every parking sign should have it's own individual number which these didn't. Don't beleive everything you see...

As everyone's said, this isn't a fine. Here's chapter and verse about parking on private land: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/perso...park-fines.html

Think yourself lucky - I've driven on farmers land before & had a shot gun produced from the back of a Land Rover..!!
Logically speaking, to put a charge on parking would necessitate some form of signage & publicity. If there was neither of these things, somethings very much amiss.
I'm guessing the farmer gave the field over to parking & hired the parking firm, who should have done the signing etc.
May be worth a call to Silverstone to find out if this was the case & which farmer?
Of course it may be a practical joke from someone else parked in the field..
