If there is a smaller reverse light you can install between the 2 tail lights, might give it a factory look

Would be difficult. The area you suggest is where two of the cover securing screws fit and the cover itself is ribbed at that point.

If you check out the Australian spec model, it employs an extra stop light, pod mounted on a tall stalk so the mod I'm now committed to won't be far removed from factory look wink

Further progress. After removing the aluminium panel behind the rear wheel (10 screws) I found the two rear light plug/socket connectors. Previous research indicated the four way one carried the fog and reversing light supply. As expected the green/brown (switched +ve) and black (-ve) reverse light cables were not matched by connections in the plug part. Just two wires were present here feeding the fog light. After confirming 12 volts was present on the reversing light cables, when reverse gear selected with ignition on, they were cut close to the socket and extended to reach the rear light housing. Temporary removal of the leather check strap eased the new cable routing alongside that of the number plate light.

The rear light cover is secured with three M5 screws. They locate onto rivnuts on a supporting bracket. The upper facing one was found to be the ideal location to mount the reversing light pod. It was drilled out to leave a 9mm hole, being the tapping size for the fine thread M10 support stud. An M10 clearance hole would have left minimal metal on the 16mm wide bracket. After tapping, the M10 stud was fitted with washer and locknut below. The lamp pod was then assembled onto the hollow stud with shakeproof and rubber washers between, and connections made to the new cable.

The plastic lamp cover was then carefully cut to form a snug fit around the rubber mounting washer and seal against it when the two remaining cover screws were tightened up.

Finished result.

Neat job Kirk made easier because the new lamp had correct pins pre-fitted. In my case was fitting an extra lamp in different location so broke connection to green/brown and black wires at socket to allow cable extension.

If you had simply pushed the positive light connection into plug location to mate with green/brown cable on socket, you would have had gearbox switched reversing light - no perhaps wink

Good Thread!

I just changed the fog to a white reversing lamp using the Car Solutions white lamp shown in this Thread. However I have yet to hook it to the reversing switch.

I ran my own cable from front to rear to use the oem fog lamp switch on the dashboard for upfront fogs.

Next step is track down the reversing switch and tie my cable into it. I am sure I will be able to do it but it appears that removal of the transmission tunnel must happen for access. I did spot a switch from below but it looks like a pressure switch. Is that what I should be looking for?

I also got into the rear indicator pods and found that a hollow shaft pod is needed to keep the oem look to replace the reflectors with red led lamps.

The light at the end of the tunnel is actually a train. 2019 M3W

The live switched reversing light feed is already in place terminating a few inches from the OE rear foglight. No need to run wires or lift transmission tunnel.

Check out this post.
