What a sad thing especially as the folk were out celebrating.

Thoughts for those lost and their families, we have to stand together to fight this evil.

Just awful.... can you imagine if one of our family was killed?

I find the news hard to process. It's so alien, so sad, so wasteful.

Sadly France has again been the victim of an unspeakable action by one of the fanatics who glory in their own death and those they kill with senseless actions.

As Daesh loses territory in Syria and Iraq it is reported that the attacks around the world will increase.

We live in times where our civil liberties have to be put on hold to allow those who are our frontline defence to get on with the job.

Our police and intelligence services both MI5 and MI6 need a free hand as does GCHQ and other agencies.

We are after all at war albeit a different kind of war.

People of my parents’ generation had restrictions placed on them during the last war and indeed during the cold war.

We need to place terrorists both those convicted and on remand in specialist prisons that have an austere regime and where those incarcerated are closely supervised.

There are number of MoD sites that could be taken out of mothballs and modified.

My sympathises to all those impacted in Nice and I include those from the emergency services who responded and dealt with the situation

What shocked me this morning was my lack of disbelief when reading the news, it's getting all too familiar. My thoughts with the people of France.

I couldnt disagree more. When we start giving the security services a "free hand" and interning suspected potential terrorists as you suggest, then we have lost. The terrorists have succeeded and we have descended to the level of Stalin or Adolf.

Not only that but as we proved with internment in Norniron - it simple doesnt work. Start interning innocent muslims and you will lose whatever support you have from the muslim community. Just as we lost the support of much of the catholic community in ireland when we interned anyone we thought might be IRA.

We need to ask ourselves " what is it that we are doing right"? Because we are doing something right that has meant very few atrocities here and far more in France and elsewhere. I've heard it suggested that is because we havent tried to force immigrants to conform to a british way of life, we havent banned headscarves like the french for example.Instead we have been tolerant and open and in the main have been give the support of the immigrant community.

You will never completely prevent the actions of the lone nutter whether he be british as at dunblane or nigerian muslim as with Lee Rigby. God knows the yanks have far more american mass murderers than muslim ones. Hard as it sounds we need a sense of proportion here.

Whats required in this situation is careful measured thought not knee jerk reactions that only provoke a spiral.

How my heart agrees with Pete and my head with Howard. I'm proud to live in a country which can calmly debate such dichotomy.

Like everyone else my sympathy goes out to all of our friends in France.

As the child of a military family I urge everyone to avoid the use of the term war. War would indicate military versus military and this like other recent events is not the case. No one in the military wants to be used in a civilian environment.

I would urge consolidation of the NATO alliance promises to maintain peace, effective use of increased intelligence, then get someone to dial 21 Sqn and give them an address to light up.

Use the sharp pointy knives not the big bombs. But I do have to agree this is no longer in any way acceptable.

Howard, I did not mention internment. I carefully said those convicted and on remand I.e those remanded in custody awaiting trial. I believe they need to be segregated from the other prisoners to avoid them spreading their poison also easier to monitor them.

I do believe that political correctness and human rights hampers those who are involved in preventing attacks. That prevention is largely intelligence lead.
