Several plastic buckets one with a new sponge and some car cleaner ! depending on how dirty or just warm water and a second bucket to rinse out the sponge ( grit sticks in sponge and scratches the car ) . After washing it wash out buckets then do the same with a chamois leather .
Then get the wax out HINT HINT .

It's a hand job for me (no pun intended!).
A bucket, shampoo and a sponge.
Clean water to rinse and dry off.
All done in less than 30 minutes.
Polishing afterwards, that's less than an hour in all. Perfect.

I just put a decorators plastic drop sheet over the engine and close the bonnet (using the clips to hold it in place). Works well enough...with the engine cold of course! That's what I do I've never washed the bonnet without covering the engine as when I first got the car a couple of years ago there was heavy corrosion on the spark plugs which made me think that it had been washed without care in the past

Just treat her like any other mistress , give her a good sponging and lots of lather , followed by some gentle stroking and caressing !

I never use a sponge, I use mitts, currently Meguiars lambswool. 2 buckets, one with shampoo and second a rinse bucket for mitt.
Spray car first with pressure washer keeping a decent distance, this softens dirt.
Shampoo as above.
Rinse with pressure washer.
Dry with towel and air blower in beading area,nooks and crannies.
Polish and wax when needed.
Autofinesse Triple between waxes.
A sponge can collect bits of grit and drag them over the paintwork, a lambswool mitt tends to pick them up and "absorb" them for rinsing out.
This minimises "swirl marks" but not completely.
Bugs, tar removed before shampooing.
Bird poo washed off gently asap, preferably before it bakes on! No hard rubbing as it can be gritty.....

Depending on your intentions with cleaning the car there are lots of good ways to proceed. Many have been suggested here. Another suggestion, however, used for my show cars, is not to use tap water. Water spots come from minerals in the water. Use only distilled or purified water (e.g. no minerals) to a get a spot free clean.

I was caught out recently using a gritty sponge. the whole rear panel, drivers side, visibly scratched. took it to Bicester specialists for a quote but never heard back.
