BTR axle issue. I have had to replace the rear wheel bearings in my 1997 Plus 8 BTR axle. No problems with the job but I can not see how to adjust the end float. The outer race is fixed within the axle tube and the inner retained to the half shaft. hence the end float is the clearance between the rollers and the inner/outer race, (1.2mm) Unlike the Salisbury axle, there appears to be no shims in the parts list.

I claimed more than 10 times for a repair during the last 1.5 years. My garage did not do it. They said, the BTR axle cannot be shimmed and I have to live with it as is. ... Really?
The pressed steel retainer inside the drum sets the bearing end float They should be replaced when the bearings are, as they deform to set the preload Crude as hell really....

Heinz, I thought my BTR diff had a problem (2012 4/4) when enthusiastic driving with a passenger, but on close examination under the car, I found that the final cast aluminium transmission tunnel is not central to the drive shaft and the rear Uni joint joint touches the tunnel due to the extra passenger weigh. So simple fix I don!t take passengers on my fun runs.
Thanks for the input Simon But I think I still missed the point. The steel retainers retainers push against the oil seal and the outer bearing race. and the said oil seal also pushes against the inner race i.e. stopping the half shaft coming out. However with all the forces in the world acting on the inner race and the outer race nothing will stop the rollers "floating " in and out within the bearing tracks. As you say crude as hell really. Have I missed something or are we saying that's how it is?
There is a spacer but no shims to adjust "end float". I can't find any notes by Me in my Files about BTR end float. I do have a BTR in My '63 +4-4str but never had reason to take it apart. I guess I would measure the end float just to insure it is not excessive. What is excessive? I would talk to Billie Berringer about that.

Really? My guess the BTR is pre-set. But I would check the End-Float with a dial gauge to insure not a problem. I bet I can figure out how to adjust it. (by making the spacer thicker or thinner.)
I have worked with German Engineers/Machinist. I am sure they could do this also.

Thanks for the replies guys but I suspect bases on the BTR Drawing supplied that a non adjustable 1.2mm end float is the design intent. The reasoning is as follows:- Unlike many designs the BTR half shaft has a SINGLE bearing, so whilst in theory one can set a bearing clearance by moving the shaft inwards there is no opposite bearing controlling or setting it outwards. so to stop it moving outwards with shims they would have to be against a fixed part (axle tube) and a rotating part (half shaft). So I conclude that the end float is fixed by the bearing rollers end clearance within the bearing and is not shimable. I assume the loads on the bearing are relatively low and what appears to be excessive end float (1.2mm) is not considered too detrimental to the life of the bearing.
