Just received my 'new' 4/4 1991 - finding my way round it ! I think the battery and jack etc are under the shelf ? How do I remove or lift the shelf ? When delivered above the shelf were only the hood and tonneau cover .

Pull the carpet forward from the back edge, then unscrew and lift out centre plywood panel.

Hi Mikeysaling,
the carpet behind the seats that goes up over the shelf should have some press studs near the floor, undo them and lift the carpet cover off, you will find a wooden shelf with a lid, under the lid will be the tools, battery is probably in front of the rear axle under the shelf although there may be an aluminium inspection cover behind the passenger seat.
Enjoy,
Ian

Is this a 4 seater?

In '91 the tools would be in the "tool box" under the driver's side bonnet, above your knees.
Assuming a 2 seater, the battery will be passenger side under the parcel shelf in front of the rear axle (don't think CVH were different to earlier X-flow or later Zetec).
The "tool tray" under the parcel shelf came in much later - assuming a non-modified car of course... smile

Tomorrow??
Take a flashlight and open now! You know you want to grin2
A tip, if dealer didn't tell you - release the rear bonnet catch before front one. Refitting is the reverse of opening, i.e. front catch first!
ENJOY! smile

My 93 cvh 4/4 had the battery on left hand side on a mounting pkate just in front of the rear axle.
Access......pull back carpet on rear shelf to expose the wooden cover. Release the holding clips and remove. Probably no tool tray as it will be under bonnet against the bulkhead on driver's side.
Earth from battery is to the chassis near the battery. There was a tight fit getting spanners onto the battery terminals so be patient undoing them.
It is worth considering fitting battery charger wires to a socket fitted to the rear panel between the seats to eliminate accessing the battery the hard way! I have a Ctech unit that comes with a battery connection cable that I have used in preference to my cigarette/power socket, fitted direct to battery terminals with a plug connector to the charger as standard. My battery is under the bonnet not hidden away!
